Your question, Hollis, for me anyway, is not in the least shallow. It may masquerade as shallow. Just as I could easily have been dismissed as a mere crying little boy, who was in fact, when separated from his Mom in pedestrian traffic (and her so beautifully coiffed and attired in her fur coat and ...

Yes, energy is the word. Mr. Cagney was wide-open, full-time, energy with purpose. He could keep the accelerator to the floor and remain fully in control. I truly admire that in his performances. I have trouble with anything frenetic. An example of what I mean comes from the same One-Two-Three. I am...

Essential like air and water...sure
If some know-all process was developed to determine what separated “essential “movies from all other movies, I bet this list would include a lot of movies TCM does not have the rights to.
My opinion: The term “Essentials “, as employed by TCM, is an inexcusable exercise in chauvinism.

I have always been impressed with the cleverly turned phrase. So much I often compliment people on their use of words and phrases. Perhaps lacking in the skill myself causes me to be enthralled with good conversationlists. So for me, Ollie, if the songs (words and music) are good I can sit through a...

Hollis, Over the years, I believe I have tried most programs that are an alternative to Microsoft's Windows programs. Eventually, just as you did with your latest browser reversal, I go back to Gates. Fought it forever. Quicktime over Media Player, three or four different browsers trying to get away...

Classic with no theater release?
A Moon for the Misbegotten (1975) Material: Eugene O’Neill’s highly respected play Accomplished actors: Jason Robards, Jr, Colleen Dewhurst, Ed Flanders Awards: 5 Emmy nominations, 1 win (Ed Flanders) My Opinion: This movie length production is classic in every respect. My Question: Does the fact th...

Not directly related to films, a book I recently read by Timothy Egan, The Worst Hard Time might be enjoyed by others, who, like myself, have always been fascinated by our country's dust bowl history. A time that spurred so much good writing and thus movies based on the theme. Obviously, Steinbeck's...

Enjoyed The Trial ...I love it when something far exceeds what I expected. I recorded it because I sensed, from what I had read of it, that it was a film I should see. That caused its viewing to begin with one strike against it. Of the things I liked about it (which were several), was Perkins, (neve...

Have really enjoyed these pejorative exchanges, typed with such stunning civility and erudition it intimidates the casual, undereducated, classic movie fan who, humbly armed with his trusty Webster's 1961 Edition of the New Collegiate Dictionary, wades in, caution denied, to say a few words. Except ...
