Her Cardboard Lover (1942)
Her Cardboard Lover (1942) This rom-com, directed by George Cukor, has an interesting plot: Norma Shearer hires Robert Taylor (sporting a Bela Lugosi Dracula haircut with a point down the middle) to protect her from herself. Norma plays a Palm Beach vacationer hopelessly in love with a womanizer, pl...

Re: Oscar Nominations
The studios that spent thousands of dollars on "for your consideration" campaigns and didn't get a nomination are upset that a performance in a movie from a studio that had no budget to mount a campaign succeeded in getting a nomination based on members being asked informally (through soc...

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?
Fellini Satyricon (1969) Self-indulgent, pansexual, homoerotic, decadent… these are some descriptions that apply to Satyricon. Since the film’s subject is ancient Rome, they are also apt. I enjoyed it as a lesson in film history, made at a time when cinematic barriers were coming down. It was Fellin...

Re: Fallen Angel
Fallen Angel is a very good choice. And I agree with James about the chemistry between Dana Andrews and Linda Darnell.

Re: Foreign film poll
Most of the foreign films I've seen are from France, Italy, Sweden, Japan and South Korea. One of the best movies I saw in 2022 was Official Competition, which came from Spain.

Knives Out (2019). Rian Johnson recognized the charm of the drawing room murder mystery, popularized by Agatha Christie. Johnson tweaks the formula through its narcissistic characters, who are not aristocrats, but are well-to-do thanks to their family patriarch, a rich mystery writer played by Chris...

Metropolitan (1990) Directed by Whit Stillman TCM On Demand This movie is on my ten-best list. It’s one of the great New York movies and is my favorite New York Christmas movie. Shot on location, it has the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, great shots of Manhattan neighbourhoods and buildings, an...

Re: Scorsese Screens...
This is a good selection of films. As already mentioned, each French New Wave director had their own distinct style. Although at times there were similarities, in particular Breathless and Truffaut's Shoot the Piano Player.

Elvis (2022) The King of Rock & Roll gets the Baz Luhrmann treatment (and it works here). Austin Butler as Elvis is electric, a performance that is visceral and poignant. Tom Hanks, jowled and cagey, plays Colonel Parker, the grifter who hitched his wagon to the Elvis gravy train. What emerges i...
