Re: "Written on the Wind", 1956 Douglas Sirk

"Ludicrously foxy" is by far the best description of Dorothy Malone's performance I have ever read! Thanks especially to Tennessee Williams, in the 1950s it was acceptable, maybe even expected, for "Suthun" gals to go c-r-a-z-y, which let some actresses do a powerful lot of emot...

"Written on the Wind", 1956 Douglas Sirk

Tonight I watched this Douglas Sirk potboiler after a very long, well-earned hiatus. I spent the night immersed in unmitigated soap, played to the hilt to the melodramatic music of Frank Skinner. The film was made in 1956 and it seems to have preserved its appearance; no doubt somebody thought it wa...

Absolutely agree!! She had class and depth.

"From the Terrace", 1960

Hadn't seen this film until quite recently. Screenplay by Ernest Lehmann from the magnum opus by John O'Hara. A singular chore condensing that kind of novel into a 2.5 hour film. Directed by Mark Robson and starring Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Leon Ames and a small part by Myrna Loy. Some things t...

Re: Name Five Films Worthy of Rediscovery

" Jew Suss ", 1934, Conrad Veidt, Cedric Hardwick, directed by Lothar Mendes. A stunning performance from Veidt, even with his broken Englilsh. The film provided the proverbial two fingers to defy Hitler after Veidt absolutely refused to cowtow to the Nazis. The film is of historical inter...

Re: 10 Westerns With 100% On Rotten Tomatoes

I seldom read or have read any film criticism before seeing a film, unless I've heard a lot about it or am sceptical about something. Then again, I've refused to see films which have received critical acclaim or hype because of the nature of the film, the actors, the subject-matter etc. "The S...

Re: 10 Westerns With 100% On Rotten Tomatoes

I always form my own opinion from experiences with movies, too, and have often been in disagreement with critics. The same applies to musical performance, plays etc. What I've tried to argue is that those who are engaged in the creative arts like to have their works positively acknowledged by critic...

Re: 10 Westerns With 100% On Rotten Tomatoes

Your final sentence is valid but critics do fulfil a necessary role, since most quality film-makers have always been eager to have their works 'critically acclaimed'. Because it's a business and they want critics to review their films so as to bring in viewers. I do read what critics say - but only...

Re: 10 Westerns With 100% On Rotten Tomatoes

And now and in regard to this list of westerns, I find it hard to believe that 'Old Yeller', 'The Shooting' and 'The Grey Fox' have apparently received a "100% Rotten Tomato score" and not that they're not all fine films. (...personally, I can't imagine why I didn't see 'Unforgiven', 'The...

... My only disappointment in the movie is never learning why Thorwald killed Mr. Drucker's dog. And had there at one time been something significant buried under that flower that got shorter? ... Sepiatone The dog was killed because it was sniffing around Throrwald's "pet flower bed" whe...

Re: The Apartment

I've always felt, and from the impression I've always gotten I'm not alone in this thinking, that the two big stars from the so-called "Golden Age" and who might best personify the idea of "the average American male" or the "American Everyman" in films, would be Jack L...
