Re: I Just Watched...

https://pics.filmaffinity.com/The_Firebird-980765176-large.jpg I checked out THE FIREBIRD (1934) last night. it was piffle, but highly amusing piffle, antiquated to the point where the entirety of the 90 minute(ish) plot and the "twist" solution to the mystery would be all of the first th...

Re: I Just Watched...

I'll quit talking about ALTERED STATES soon (although I make the sidenote that GOD, I'VE MISSED IT WHEN WE HAVE A GROUP DISCUSSION ABOUT A FILM, ESPECIALLY A WEIRD ONE)... however... there's one more thing that's worth talking about and that is WILLIAM HURT (side note- I keep thinking WILLIAM HOLDE...

Re: I Just Watched...

I'm increasingly bemused by the notion of ORSON WELLES directing ALTERED STATES. According to imdb, the cast and the director all got into ISOLATION TANKS in order to understand the material. can't you just see ORSON getting STUCK in his TANK and having to be dollied around on set in it like a DALE...

I had never seen these outtakes before! Thanks for sharing.

IT. NEVER. FAILS. TO. TICKLE ME.

Re: I Just Watched...

COPIED AND PASTED FROM THE WIKIPEDIA PAGE FOR ALTERED STATES: Russell later said his agent told him directors who had turned down the project included Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, Sydney Pollack, Robert Wise, and Orson Welles . He says his agent told him he was the twenty-seventh choice. [17]...

Re: I Just Watched...

1.It did look like a goat to me as well, but in the following scene the dialogue specifically says sheep, but maybe Russell put goats on camera to undercut Cheyefsky or to disorient the audience. 2.Yeah you would have thought that they would have arrested him for murder, public nudity, or killing a...

Re: I Just Watched...

Notes of viewings from the last few days. Both classic era and modern. Altered States (1980 ) has a morbid fascination about offscreen specifics: it was the film debut for both William Hurt (the biggest role here) and Drew Barrymore (blink and you'll miss her), but it was also wild Ken Russell's la...

There were a quite a few extremely unpleasant posters (I am being kind in describing them) at the TCM message boards.
LOOK, I'M VERY SORRY ABOUT THE TIME I KILLED CAROL LYNLEY, (in my defense, I couldn't let her off easy- she just sucks that bad in RETURN TO PEYTON PLACE.)

Re: I Just Watched...

...and if i am right and CHAYEFSKY wouldn't budge on tweaking the script, I can't say as I blame him because he had on numerous occasions knocked it out of the park (all while fighting studios and producers who wanted rewrites) to a point where he felt like he didn't need to listen to anyone. Check...

Re: I Just Watched...

... AND YET, it is a rare instance where it's not his fault, IT'S THE WRITER'S FAULT, the writer being PADDY CHAYESFSKY- who himself wrote at least TWO SCRIPTS that (like RUSSELL'S pair of aces) command my eternal respect- MARTY and NETWORK, they're both great, I have no notes. (I think he also wro...

Re: I Just Watched...

to go on something of a tangent from OLIVER REED.... I watched this the other day and thought about posting here as it is about HISTORY and CHRISTMAS and I know there must be some ANGLOPHILES here. One of these three archeologists actually looks a lot like OLIVER REED, but is much more useful and pl...

Re: I Just Watched...

Haha-yes! Last night I noticed weird inappropriate music watching Ken Russell's THE DEVILS '71. Again, I had seen it went it first came out with my Russell fan friend. (He was my BEST FRIEND's boyfriend and she is a devout Christian. I can't begin to describe how uncomfortable I was watching that c...

Re: I Just Watched...

I find this perfectly believable. Have you heard of: "The Demon Core"? It was approx. fourteen pounds of plutonium molded into two hemispheres. Experiments were being conducted on the effects of neutrons being reflected back into the mass as the two pieces were brought close together. The...
