Re: August 2024 Schedule Posted, Summer Under the Stars

It occurs to me that the only Jerry Lewis films I've seen are The King of Comedy and My Friend Irma Goes West . As for watching the others, for me they probably fall into that "Let's don't and say we did" category. I covered a lot of Jerry Lewis films last year in my journey to tackle as ...

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

I am so glad that TCM showed THE BAND'S VISIT. Although I haven't seen the musical, I love the score. David Yazbek seems like the best Broadway composer since Sondheim. [Some spoilers below.] If you know the musical, you'll spot the song cues: "Papi Hears the Ocean," "Omar Sharif.&quo...

Re: August 2024 Schedule Posted, Summer Under the Stars

Showing SPITFIRE, UNDERCURRENT and BREAK OF HEARTS will not increase the number of Katharine Hepburn fans. They're more along the lines of "How can we miscast Katharine Hepburn?" I love that Ossie Davis is getting a day. He is brilliant in THE HILL. His castmate from that film, Harry Andre...

Oh man, Feinberg, I'd forgotten that 1925 Wizard of Oz. That was pretty bad!

Re: I Just Watched...

Alibi Ike (1935) Joe E. Brown comedy is simple and modest , but pleasant and likable, with him as a baseball player with a habit of trying to get out of everything, including procrastinating his marriage to young Olivia De Havilland. Considering some of the others below, this is very good.--KR: IMA...

Re: MUSINGS, PONDERINGS, RUMINATIONS AND FANCIES

The whole series of Checkmate (only two seasons) is or was available at a reasonable price. The quality of picture is not the best, but adequate. The gimmick was that they tried to prevent murders from happening. Anthony George had a detective agency, Doug McClure was the rookie, and Sebastian Cabot...

Re: MUSINGS, PONDERINGS, RUMINATIONS AND FANCIES

Wait a minute, that was Checkmate with Sebastian Cabot and others but I don't remember any of those episodes either. Oh, well. I'm still trying to process E.G. Marshall's naked body. I was a big fan of Checkmate. Anthony George, Doug McClure, Sebastian Cabot. Keefe Brasselle--remember him?--despera...

Re: I Just Watched...

Blood and Sand had just about every cliche you would expect in a bullfighting movie, or perhaps it established them all. The print looked a bit faded. Rouben Mamoulian's direction was pretty much by the numbers; I expected more. What a choice Tyrone Power has to make: Linda Darnell or Rita Hayworth?...

Re: MUSINGS, PONDERINGS, RUMINATIONS AND FANCIES

I'm also a fan of Forever Amber. I'd say that the print shown last night on TCM was a bit faded, as was Blood and Sand. Agree totally about Preminger's direction. Linda Darnell and Cornel Wilde at their best. Great costumes and sets, handsome men and beautiful women. It's a treat. You gotta love Lin...

Re: I Just Watched...

In the novel Pay It Forward , the boy is killed when he is on his way to the White House to receive an award from the President, but sees a gay-bashing, intervenes to help the victim, and receives fatal injuries. In the film he dies accidentally at the hands of one or more thuggish Latino students. ...
