Re: June 2024 Schedule Posted
Lots of good stuff in June! I've never seen Makioka Sisters or Judex. Premieres include Eye of the Needle, My Beautiful Laundrette, and Billy Elliot. Purple Noon is on the schedule--Alain Delon fans will be happy to see this. The Anatole Litvak tribute includes The Long Night and The Journey. Has Th...

The young man in a few of the stories is probably Jackson, a law clerk who is mentioned in a few of the novels. Jackson has no personality in the books, so it's not surprising he is rarely used in the series. I agree that the hairstyles are usually becoming. We're past the helmet hair and sausage ro...

I think the reasons for the contradictions are deep within Odets' psyche. He had prestige in Hollywood because he had been a big name on Broadway. He also made a lot more money in Hollywood. Odets is usually considered the inspiration for the Coen Brothers' Barton Fink. John Garfield himself was one...

Re: Ranking Only the Best (and the Very Worst) of a Movie Year Project
1939 was a good year, though hardly Hollywood's greatest, as some have claimed. Most of the years from 1939-1951 are strong, and the next year CinemaInternational has proposed, 1962, is a strong candidate for the best year of the studio era. Favorites : Gone With the Wind Le jour se lève The Wizard ...

oh wow, I didn't know they ever showed GERTIE on the show (PERRY MASON) I always thought she was a "MARIS"- shows you what happens when you only have access to syndication. I always pictured GERTIE as working out of THE BROOM CLOSET and looking more or less like this: https://i0.wp.com/bl...

I'm glad that ElCid and Hibi see THE BIG KNIFE just as I do. It will make DARK PASSAGE seem like a flawless masterpiece by comparison. I watched the intro to hear Eddie talk about why THE BIG KNIFE would be considered noir. Eddie mentioned 1) a secret from the past (many non-noir films have that ele...

My favorite moment in TOOTSIE is Teri Garr's scream when Michael reveals on live TV that he is Dorothy.

The 1983 remake of Breathless is the one where Richard Gere shows off the family jewels. That's all I remember about it!
Bingo Long is one I'd like to see.

Speaking of the name Edsel reminded me that I knew a woman named Sally, which was a nickname for her real name, Itsil. That's far out even for the rural South of many years ago. And Holden's Sweetie's Grandmother had it right about Sylvia Miles being annoying. That's the quality she brings to the sc...

For Day of the Locust fans: a digitally restored version will be shown on May 25 at the Camelot Theater in Palm Springs, with Dave Karger hosting. This increases the chances that Day of the Locust will be shown on TCM and in other outlets.

Re: Ranking Only the Best (and the Very Worst) of a Movie Year Project
As promised, a trip back to over 100 years ago. No worst films for me in these lists, only best. The next year up will be 1948. 1948!! What a wonderful year. The unlisted merely "OK" films from this year would be "Also liked" in many a year. Stinky the Skunk may stay in his burr...

For those of you who might like to see two attractive young men making out to some beautiful music, I recommend going to YouTube to find a video that uses John Barrowman's recording of "Unusual Way" to a clip from a Brazilian film. No total nudity, no mimed sex, nothing twisted. "Unus...
