Brenda, I nearly chose Jean Arthur , so nearly but her gift to me apart from her comedic timing is her voice. I haven't seen her in a silent, I wonder if she would have come across. Alison, You have hit upon the two top reasons that she became a star. It was partly because of her unusual voice that...

:D Yes, I have to agree that Charlie had an eye for the ladies. I picked Jean Arthur because to me she exemplifies the modern, intelligent woman, who's always so immaculate too. But she's also funny and has an air of mystery about her. But for pure glamour , there's no one like Carole. http://i33.ph...

Paulette Goddard was truly stunning in "Modern Times", and Edna in "A Woman of Paris." I almost picked Clara Bow too. She was pure magic in "It." My Mom thought Clara was prettier than Garbo. (Just goes to show how much personality can count with some!)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and therefore always subjective. To me, certain qualities about a person can make them "beautiful" as much as any physical attribute. That being said.... Lillian Gish Mary Miles Minter Mary Philbin Esther Ralston Betty Compson Delores Costello Mary Pic...

" You Can't Take it with You " is sure non-stop fun Brenda. In my country it was titled (in Spanish) Tómalo o Déjalo ( Take it or Leave It ). Everything with Jean Arthur, especially from 1935 onwards is very, very worthwhile. Once again we are in complete agreement Fernando. :) As for Sta...

I've just seen You Can't Take It With You with one of my favorite little screwballs Jean Arthur (see avatar),Jimmy Stewart, Edward Arnold, and Lionel Barrymore. The latter two give superlative performances and this 1938 gem is chock full of feel good energy and tender wisdom. I got to see this on a ...

I've heard that she was the only one of Chaplin's ex wives who didn't want his money.

Dear Hollis,

Take care and try to keep your chin up! I'll be praying that you find your way over this hurdle too. I'm sure you've run the gauntlet over many in the past.

Sincerely,

Brenda

Good story about Ann, Mr. O'Brien! It certainly gives an insight into her character and dedication. I can't imagine a father not being proud of her! She was always the perfect, classy lady even in her precode films. I've heard that she got along well with Mary Astor (Holiday, 1930), and that their d...

Gagman: Thank you very much for the info about Mary Carr. I really didn't know who she was, but you're absolutely correct, she is the perfect "Mother figure." Her kindness to Gabrielle definitely stood out. I see that she had a very long life and that her last film was "Friendly Persu...

Sounds like you're keeping extremely busy! That's good for all us fans! :D Virginia Bruce is someone I know very little about other than she was married to John Gilbert, another fave of mine. That part of her life in itself should be quite a story. 8)

Fantastic news about your new book! I've been wanting to know more about the unfairly neglected actress Ann Harding for a long time! :) She was among the premiere of precode actresses, along with Kay, but never got the roles and attention she deserved. Maybe because she was so ethereal looking, RKO...
