Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Just watched "Torn Curtain" (1965) for the first time. Interesting. Not the best outing for Paul Newman. I know he and Hitchcock didn't get along, but he seems to sleepwalk through much of the film. Julie Andrews' role seemed to be an afterthought. What made the movie for me were the Germa...

Re: Festival of Italian Poliziotteschi in NYC

I saw "Almost Human" a couple of years ago on DVD. The disc malfunctioned, so I didn't have the best experience. It seemed pretty indebted to "Dirty Harry" at points.

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Finally, I saw "Cobra Woman" (1943) directed by Robert Siodmak. The infamous "Cobra Woman," often ridiculed as the most outrageous movie Hollywood ever produced. If not the stupidest movie made during WWII. Well, there is something to be said for that. Yet, I have to say that &qu...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Next, I saw "Death at a Funeral" (2007) directed by Frank Oz. This really cracked me up. This is the first, "British" film. (It was remade a couple years later with an African-American cast.) This is a movie that sneaks up on you. It looks very normal at first, and then the crazi...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I had a good movie week last week. First, I saw "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (1976) directed by Clint Eastwood. Yes, I waited nearly forty years to see it, and by the time I saw it, I had read so much about it that I knew all of Chief Dan George's jokes, but I was still impressed. It is a damn...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

I love "Hangover Square." I love the way there is a flame in nearly every scene of the movie. It is, I guess, one of those movies that you could say is a horror film or you could say is a film noir. It does have a Jekyll/Hyde type plot, and the music is by Bernard Herrmann, who wrote the m...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I watched "Charade" (1963) directed by Stanley Donnen, this morning. I couldn't really warm up to it. The dialogue seemed to be trying too hard to be funny, and I didn't sense a lot of chemistry between Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. What really stood out to me was Walter Matthau as the CI...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

My son and I saw "Amazing-Spider Man 2" on Saturday. While it isn't a bad movie, it was just "weightless" and lacking in impact. We thought it was a step down from the Andrew Garfield Spiderman movie from a couple years ago. The movie is badly structured. Too much time is spent w...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

On Friday I watched "Arch of Triumph," (1948) directed by Lewis Milestone. It was different. At times, it didn't even feel like a Hollywood film. Apparently the movie was four hours long and then it was cut down to about 2 hours plus. I've never been a Charles Boyer fan, and that worked ag...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Today I watched "The Night Porter" (1974). I started out really liking the movie, but it turned out to have the pace of a glacier. If it could have been 20 minutes shorter, it would have packed more of a punch. I really liked Dirk Bogarde here. The way he went from being so fastidiously ne...

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

Yesterday I watched "The Ballad of Narayama" (1958) directed by Keisuke Kinoshita. This is about a poor village where those who turn seventy are taken away into the mountains to die. I had seen and liked the 1980s version of this story by Shohei Imamura. That one took a realistic/naturalis...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

On Sunday I watched "Road House" (1948) directed by Jean Negulescu. I liked this movie. It is noir, but it feels very different from other noirs. While Lupino is the sexy stranger in town (and she is very sexy here), she is basically a good person, not a heartless seductress. Richard Widma...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Yesterday I watched "Baby Face" (1933) directed by Alfred E. Green. While I've never been a big fan of "Pre-Code" films and the mystique about them (that they are more "real" than Code films), I have to say that I liked "Baby Face" a lot. Barbara Stanwyck is t...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

This week I managed to see "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (2014) directed by Wes Anderson. I really wanted to like this movie, but it didn't really work for me (except for one sequence that paid tribute to Hitchcock films of the Thirties). As several have mentioned, the movie is something of a...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

A "Gainsborough ghastly" is a film from the British Gainsborough studios in the Forties that was set in the past and involved aristocratic people behaving badly. While nobody actually rips a bodice in one of these movies, they are close in spirit to those kinds of romance novels. "The...
