Crimson Kimono

I was very disapponted. I just thought it was boring. I actually thought that it could be more outrageous-it seemed really serious at times, but just not interesting. The murder at the beginning was the most interesting part. I just ended up changing channels and trying different parts of the movie,...

Herbert von Karajan

There is a very interesting video which I bought recently with Karajan conducting the Beethoven 5th and Schumann's 4th. They were made in the early 60's when Karajan was starting to become more famous in the states. He is also shown as a teacher. And I think the director is the same one that Ann men...

Desire Under The Elms (1958)

I have to make a special plea to those who have not seen Desire Under The Elms which will be shown tonight on TCM at 7pm CST. I read the Eugene O'Neill play in college and was immediately stricken by it. Without giving out too many plot details, it is a study in greed and coveting. Everybody wants s...

Legend of Lylah Clare

Thanks for telling me that this movie will be on TCM! Ever since I read about this movie in "Screened Out" I have been very interested in seeing it. I really enjoyed the film "The Killing Of Sister George" which was also directed by Robert Aldrich, who also directed "Kiss Me...

Soundtrack

I agree that Percy Faith was an unusual choice as the composer of music for this film. He made so many "easy listening" recordings on Columbia in the 50's and 60's it seems maybe they had a limited budget and could only afford to hire someone of his caliber. The music does seem incongruous...

The Star Machine by Jeanine Basinger

My brother gave me a gift card for Barnes and Ignoble :D and since I was in the mood for another movie book, I chose this one. Basinger provides interview fodder in the documentary on the making of El Cid in the new dvd of the film. The book is a joy to read. It is so full of information that it cou...

The Oscar

Haven't finished seeing the film yet, but I already have some observations and probably some questions. Was this movie Widescreen? Did all studios use widescreen techniques at this time? What nationality was Stephen Boyd? It seems like he has an accent-it is hard to understand him sometimes in this ...

Fanny

I was quite suprised to see this on this week's Essentials. Not because it's bad, but for a couple of reasons- 1. Horst Buchholz. I thought he was only in the Magnificent 7 in the US, but now I've also seen him in Billy Wilder's One, Two Three. I really think he is (was) a very good actor. 2. I thou...

Last night's offerings

I have to disagree about the scores last night-but not knowing previous prints and histories, etc. these are my first times with these films! I really liked these scores! I thought they were tastefully done. But the one for "The Dragonpainter" was certainly the best. I like the use of the ...

"Rat Phink A Boo Boo"

I recorded this when it was on TCM's "Underground". Directed by Ray Dennis Steckler, it was supposed to be called "Rat Phink and Boo Boo" but they didn't have enough money to complete "and". Reminded me a lot of Russ Meyer. The female lead is very attractive and is in d...

"Victim" and "Kiss Me Stupid"

This movie was shown during the "Screened Out" Gay and Lesbian film festival last year and it was one of my favorites along with "The Killing of Sister George "and "The Fox". If you haven't seen it, do!! Very compelling story. You will never forget "Boy Barrett&quo...

Teahouse of the August Moon

Looking forward to this movie! Maltin rates it highly, but the Golden Turkey Awards doesn't like Marlon Brando playing an Asian. Very curious. I think they are showing it twice this year.

Watch it I Shall!

Looking forward to it! Thanks for all of the feedback! BTW-I wish TCM would play Lost Horizon again, but I bet Burt Bacharach might not want them to. I have a VHS copy courtesy of AMC from a few years ago. One of my favorite bad movies!! Wasn't Jack Soo in Flower Drum Song?

George Antheil

Very interesting about the play! George Antheil was a celebrated but controversial composer starting in the 20's with his "Ballet Mechanique" which included many pianos and airplane engines. As he grew older, he wrote a handful of scores for pictures, including "The Pride and the Pass...
