I am not aware of either of those titles existing. In the 20S Mabel Ballin remade VANITY FAIR and Blanche Sweet TESS, and neither of those exist, either.

gagman 66 1) SMOULDERING FIRES is indeed superb, but there are two versions - the domestic and the foreign. The foreign, which came from Laura la Plante's collection, has an English censor certificate at the front, and is comprised of second takes. In the American (originally elaborately tinted and ...

moviemagz 1) So glad you like the book. As I just mentioned, THE HOODLUM is a first class film and I didn't realise it wasn't available on DVD. I wish a decent 35mm print of the second TESS could be found. i was embarrassed to see my quote about its splendid photography attached to a VHS made from a...

catherine 1)What a good idea. I have a collection of silent-era motion picture cameras which I always intended to load with film and put to the test...but you know how it is... 2) I think Mary Pickford was fulfilling her showman's role when she spoke of the alligator sequence. And when I interviewed...

movieman1957 CharlieChaplinfan I remember hearing that Chaplin was in London, at the Savoy Hotel and ringing him nineteen times. When I finally got through, I was so tongue-tied I couldn't remember what it was I wanted to ask. I did manage to enquire whether, as was rumoured, he had made a film in E...

Jondaris II Thank you very much for those heartwarming words. The most enjoyable and fulfilling job I ever did was to edit Tony Richardson's CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE (1968). I had turned it down but was taken on halfway through the shooting because TR couldn't get on with the editor. He never cam...

Jondaris

I'm ashamed to admit that I don't know any of them -I am only gradually getting accustomed to the internet. Far too often, I will type in a website and get 'This page cannot be displayed'.

silentscreen Dear Brenda Thank you very much. When you are actually doing the work, if you don't consider it the most important thing while you are doing it, then you've made the wrong choice. But I still regret I never became a feature film director. Although the experience i gained from the two fe...

gagman 66 1) I am thrilled to know the books had such an effect. Thank you! 2) Patrick Stanbury was over at Fremantle yesterday trying to help them unpick the problems over the rights for HOLLYWOOD. But THIEF - there's always a possibility, but it needs re-mastering. As we have no financial involvem...

Ann Harding It just shows how unreliable those lists can be -- how could I overlook Ronald Colman on my list of favourite stars? A wonderful screen presence. I remember when Juliet Colman was writing her biography of her father, Eileen Bowser of the Museum of Modern Art generously loaned her a beaut...

jondaris Thanks so much! Yes, I know. But I felt driven to do that book because the subject was so important and because the films were so little known. I hoped that by writing about them, they would start to appear. I never thought I would live to see Lewis Milestone's gangster filmTHE RACKET, but ...
