Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
I wouldn't argue with you one bit, AH. I guess I was musing more about the age of impressionability. I did see the Asquith version as a teen and ended up getting a degree in linguistics years later! It's interesting that the Sound of Music and the Wizard of OZ, just recently mentioned, are other fil...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
I saw My Fair Lady when I was very young, so young that I couldn't filter anything and just got completely caught up in the story. Watching it years later, I was surprised at how many little details were firmly etched in my memory. In particular, when Eliza was hurt or distressed during the ups and ...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Thanks for those insights everyone. The first copy of the film I bought was a VHS long long ago, out of a retail bargain bin. The montages were just a lot of gray smudges in that one, and the story didn't make a lot of sense. What there was of a story seemed pretty flimsy to warrant such an elaborat...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
I totally understand, Feaito. I recently reconciled with Ninotchka . :) Glad to hear you and Ninotchka are back together again. I recently learned that, on the run up to production, they were lobbying hard to cast Cary Grant as Leon. I usually don't indulge in hypotheticals, but can you imagine???

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Hi Fealto. I had intended to record the restored version of Metropolis when it recently aired on TCM. Instead, I only got the documentary about the recovery of the lost sequences. That was pretty exciting, but I really wanted to see the film put back together. I had become pretty familiar with the (...

Re: Ann Sheridan
When this thread was initially posted, I went through my collection to see what films I had with Ms. Sheridan in them. (Not counting the hand- and butt-double credits), I only came up with Angels with Dirty Faces and It All Came True. She doesn't have a lot to do in the former, but is very well show...

Re: Carl Davis Interview
I just read part two. What a treasure you have provided us! How was the concert?
Also, I LOVED your Kevin Brownlow pieces (I know, late to the party as usual). It's like a documentary on a documentarian...so very "meta." And I liked his expression "My eyes stood on stalks."

Re: Charley Chase
Really great article--thanks for the link. I've got some Charley Chase talking shorts that I recorded during the Thelma Todd day of Summer Under the Stars . I have to admit that I couldn't quite warm up to him. I remember thinking, "There's something tragic about that guy," and when I look...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
That's a really powerful film, CCF. Before I saw it, I thought that Marian Marsh was sort of a lightweight, but her rage at the end is a tour-de-force.

Re: What is a PreCodes?
Hi Kingme. You've come across a pretty interesting subject. I first became aware of this "genre" when TCM aired a series of films to mark the publication of film historian Mick LaSalle's book "Complicated Women." He focuses on female screen personalities playing characters that s...
