Re: Welcome to Scott O'Brien, Our Guest Star for Dec. 2010
Hi Scott. It's great to have you here. I have to admit that I've only seen a few of Ann Harding's movies, namely Prestige, The Male Animal, Double Harness, and The Conquerers. I didn't "get" her at first, but thanks to a second viewing of Double Harness, I began to appreciate her genius. I...

Re: C.B. DeMille Silents
Hear hear. (Or is it Here here--I never was sure) Just another note about Farrar. Being somewhat spoiled by all of the luminous "screen beauties" that came along after her, I was at first pretty underwhelmed when she first came onto the screen in Carmen . She seemed rather matronly and pla...

Re: The Mortal Storm
Well I wasn't gonna watchit, wasn't gonna watchit, wasn't gonna watchit...and then I watched it. Man, what a picture. That was no 'standard fare.' I have to believe that it was conceived, cast, and (sooo brilliantly) executed to achieve maximum impact. And I mean that in two ways. It stands out toda...

Re: C.B. DeMille Silents
Thanks AH. As I continue to work my way through the set, I watched Joan the Woman (1915-1916) and the technique seemed to have taken a step backwards--with the stagey composition, abrupt cutting and overly-gesticualed acting. It felt more more like the two Farnum vehicles than the version of Carmen ...

Re: C.B. DeMille Silents
I have a nice boxed set of DeMille silents that I started re-watching. The earliest two are The Squaw Man and The Virginian , both from 1914. I guess you could say that they were "better than an Edison," but they are sooo primitive. A lot of pointing and chest beating going on. The editing...

Re: The Mortal Storm
So beautifully put Moira. (That's the kind of writing that got me on this site in the first place). I did a little digging on IMDB and got the sense that the release of this particular film was L.B. Mayer's deliberate step "over the line," a conscious decision to kiss the revenues from the...

Re: The Mortal Storm
It's been a while since I watched this film, but I remember being deeply affected by it. I hesitate to watch it again (for the purposes of contributing to this thread) because I'm dealing with enough depressing material in my own life right now. If I'm not mistaken, Hollywood in 1940 was still large...

Re: Maurice Chevalier
Here's something I've been very curious about for a long time about MC. In those pre-code films, there are a lot of cutaway shots of women swooning when he's out in public--almost like you would see later in an Elvis film. "Sex symbol" might be too strong of a word, but I wonder if he was ...

Re: Maurice Chevalier
I'd say that her initial disdain for him in Love Me Tonight is quite convincing, like when he's singing "Mimi."charliechaplinfan wrote:I love those thirties musicals, he's unique in those movies. It's not apparent that he and Jeanette MacDonald intensely disliked one another in real life.

Re: Frankenstein
Hilarious post, MJ, especially the last block. It totally snapped me back to that age--when we didn't know bad cinema from good, and when a certain piece of film could get under your skin and reverberate for days on end. When you were sick and had your Frankenstein marathon, were you watching the Le...

Re: Margaret Lindsay - Forgotten Warners Star !
The nice thing about this universe of film is...you're never too late to post about things. On a lark the other day, I watched the film The Case of the Curious Bride to get a glimpse of Errol Flynn in a pre-break-out role. Who was that actress playing Rhoda? She's heavenly! Noting the name--Margaret...

Re: Do You Have Trouble getting others to watch classics?
Thanks JF. Yes, the print was beautifully tinted, and the two-strip technicolor sequence at the masked ball was very vivid. And being a silent film, we could talk about what was going on without "stepping on" any dialogue.

Re: Do You Have Trouble getting others to watch classics?
I read this thread earlier in the week and resolved to try and introduce my two young sons to one of my old films this weekend. They stay with me every Saturday and Sunday and we call Saturday night "movie night." Being October, I figured a classic horror film would be in order. I selected...
