I love both Seven Samurai and Magnificent Seven , but I'll take Kurosawa's work over Sturges's - if only just barely. To be honest, though, Kurosawa didn't get around to his best work until he was old, fragile and blind. Ran isn't just the best interpretation of a Shakespeare work ever, it's also on...

Bad news all around, it seems. I am sorry for everyone's misery. This winter's been a tough one, and it hasn't been thanks to the weather. If we don't find someone to rent in the next week, we'll be homeless. I for one will be glad when this god damned move to Chicago makes good. Thus far, aside fro...

I've watched a couple of contemporary films: " Beowulf " (2007), which was interesting and amusing The amusing thing about this film is that there is an unrated cut which features, uh, Beowulf in all of his manly naked glory. The entire film. As he's beheading baddies and doing his thing....

Tonight I will be listening to The Godfathers - the band that should have been famous instead of those god-awful hacks They Might Be Giants - at Metro Chicago at what is their only United States performance on this reunion tour. That is, their only US performance in the last 20 years. This is the on...

With all due respect to my friends, only human ego would lead us to believe we can destroy this planet. We can't even make it inhospitable. Not even close. That does not mean I'm not all for changing our current ways of thinking, but I'm not ready to do so under the guise of "saving our planet ...

Can I participate? For the second time since we moved to Chicago we are having roommate issues. The first time we moved into a place - which seemed like a good deal - sight unseen and the roommate turned out to be an addict of some sort. My money's on meth or speed. What's important is that she thre...

This must be one of the most bizarrely surreal works of performance art I've ever seen.

I somehow think my enjoyment - and interpretation of - Ulysses will be forever marked by this event. In the positive, I assure you.

I couldn't have asked for a better response, as to me there is no greater warning siren than an indifferent response or, much worse, uniform agreement. The very fact that all of you have something to say - and that said something wildly differs from person to person - is about as close to championin...

Ulysses.

James Joyce has been staring me in the face for the past two months. The concept intrigues me but the execution does even more-so. Its history, the drama it produced and the meticulous reconstruction it has undergone all also pull me towards it. The question, though, is this: Is it worth reading? Is...

Bringing nothing to the party.

This philistine prefers 8 1/2.

I enjoy his later films simply because they are just the type of excessive (pretentious) ridiculousness that I believe all great artists delve into after they've "topped themselves" one too many times.
