Re: BRIDESMAIDS

I so agree with Mr. Farr's assessment of today's comedy in movies. Where are all the graduates from Universities and Colleges who received their degrees in popular writing? Have they quit already? It's probably just me, but I think it's disingenuous for Farr to compare the R-rated Bridesmaids to si...

Re: The Beatles

I think Ram is my favorite McCartney album. At least it's one I return to most often. A Love For You was an unreleased track from the Ram sessions until a version of it appeared on the soundtrack for the remake The In-Laws . (Why there, I have no idea.) The In-Laws version is way over-produced and M...

Not sure where to put this, but Jaromil Jires' masterpiece Valerie and Her week of Wonders is available for free streaming on Hulu until April 9th.
The film is pure magic. Not to be missed.

Some interesting notes by Ms. Golden on seeing some rare Gilbert films at the Library of Congress.

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Very good argument. As I say, I've heard good things about the movie and the book. By the way, what season was this? I don't even know that! It was the 2002 season. The year that Miguel Tejada, the A's shortstop, won MVP and A's pitcher Barry Zito won the Cy Young award, which means, while the film...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I just watched "Moneyball" (2011). While it had some good scenes, I was ultimately disappointed in the movie. I know it is mandatory in some circles to mock "The Natural," with its focus on "the big game," but "Moneyball" looks at the whole of a baseball seas...

Re: Orson Welles: The Eye of a Poet

There was a terrific commentary by Robert Carringer on the old Criterion laserdisc. When Ambersons was included in the Citizen Kane Ultimate Collector's Edition , it was just the film in SD. I'd hoped that when it got it's individual release that Warner Bros would have at least included Carringer's ...

Re: The Beatles

The original mono mix of the song runs 8:17 and contains the verse that is featured in the film but is not part of the official stereo version. It was thought that the original mono mix would be included in the Mono Masters, but unfortunately it was not.

Re: The Beatles

It's this edition, which gets rid of Martin's instrumental tracks and instead includes most of the songs found in the film. It was the first disc which featured remastered tracks so it will not be anything new (unless they include the full version of It's All Too Much , which I doubt). 1. Yellow Sub...

Re: The Beatles

With Disney abandoning the 3-D remake of Yellow Submarine (due to Blue Meanies, no doubt), the out-of-print DVD, along with a new Blu-ray edition of the film will be released in North America on May 29th and on the 28th for the rest of the world (which includes Pepperland, I presume). The reissue ha...

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...

Because of the dramatic difference between the first and second halves of the movie and its relative brevity, I wonder if they had a completed script when they began filming The script was finished when filming started, but is considerably different from the first drafts, which had Igor and the mon...

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...

I hope I'm not repeating a thread, but I don't see anything on this cute Saturday night feature on ME TV. We all know Svengoolie. The format is familiar. But it's a good excuse to re-watch some cornball horror films, with some palatable humor on the side. This is not my first time, of course. I liv...

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

Tristana is, perhaps, my favorite Bunuel film. Great acting, and cinematography, as well as lots of themes, symbols and motifs telling a story about, about among other things, independence; sexual (the balcony scene) and otherwise. Great film.
