Re: The January 2014 Schedule for TCM

Gallant Journey is a not altogether successful film, but it's worth seeing because William Wellman invests the film with his love of flying. Glenn Ford gives a really nice performance. It's may be his sweetest film, kind of dreamy rather than the usual Wellman grit. Quite interesting. I'll watch it...

Re: PBS

I've seen the title Lark Rise to Candleford , but never seen the show. What's it about? From Wiki: The series is set in the small Oxfordshire hamlet of Lark Rise and the wealthier neighbouring market town of Candleford towards the end of the 19th century. The series chronicles the daily lives of fa...

Re: The January 2014 Schedule for TCM

What do you think are Phillips Holmes best film roles? I think I would name An American Tragedy, Broken Lullaby, Night Court , and Chatterbox , but maybe there are others I've missed? I would have said The first three... I haven't seen Chatterbox . Night Court was the movie that really made me sit ...

I haven't seen September Affair yet sadly. I don't think it's ever going to be on. I gave up TCM last year for financial reasons, and find I only miss it now and then. In contrast, I could not live without Youtube - I've seen so many rare titles this way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRO...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Wendy / Fernando - what did you think of this? Margo irked me, I thought Whitney Bourne was stunning, and Claude is just stupendous! This print is really good, and impressive cinematography and other montage sequences though out the film make this so unique. Ben Hech's dialogue for Claude was cracki...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I envy you, ChiO. Being a huge Claude Rains fan, as well as a Slavko Vorkapich nut since witnessing how his art direction could transform a film after seeing I Bury the Living (1958), I've been trying to catch the entire movie of Crime Without Passion for some time. Moira - look what I just found: ...

Re: Merry Christmas!

This is as good a thread as any to ask this question. Isn't there a movie where Fred MacMurray is a parole officer, and takes a female client home for the holidays? The client might even be Stanwyck. I'm not sure. What is the name of that thing? Red - that is REMEMBER THE NIGHT (1940) with Fred and...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

What about you who grew up in places other than Cleveland. was your view of British comedy confined to Ealing, or were you aware of other films? The very first British comedy I ever saw was THE MOUSE THAT ROARED, in a theater with my family when I was just a little kid, and I thought it was weird b...

Re: Any Good Recipes On File?

Moira - I did come across Lilek's book REGRETTABLE FOOD at the library, and it is a hoot, but gosh darn it - no recipes included! I did find a book called FASHIONABLE FOOD - SEVEN DECADES OF FOOD FADS which is a good resource. PT - That link for the NY Worlds Fair cookbook looks interesting, but it ...

Re: Any Good Recipes On File?

Hi Gang - I've been on a search for Retro/Vintage recipes for dishes from the 1930's-1950's as I am planning on attending an event one of our local historic preservation groups is hosting. Been perusing some old cookbooks and will most likely settle on some kind of molded Jello salad, but I don't wa...

Did y'all know that "Andrew Foyle" can sing? I just discovered the actor who played Christopher Foyle's son Andrew (actor/singer Julian Ovenden) has quite an impressive voice: Julian also is set to appear in the next installment...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

Mike, I've seen one Carry On movie and enjoyed it much more than I ever thought i would. It was so much fun! I think it was Carry On Caesar, or something like that, a spoof of all those toga movies. JF - must have been Carry On Cleo - the first Carry On film I ever saw, and one of the best. I was h...

Re: Welcome to Martha Crawford Cantarini

I think my very favorite thing I did was the fire scene in Interrupted Melody. Although a fake fire, it was hugely real looking and the most expensive indoor scene ever at that time. So, it was a wonderful interaction with the horse I used. We rehearsed it for three weeks. His name was Ski and what...
