Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
MichiganJ wrote: I just watched Rio Grande, which I didn't realize was part of a "Calvary Trilogy" (along with Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon). Loved all three (Fort Apache still being my favorite), and the only "flaw" I can see in Grande is there are too many songs! Who'da thought? And wa...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
I am pretty new here, and I don't want to go back too far in this thread, but I just wanted to say to MichiganJ how much I enjoyed your post on John Ford. Watch out. Ford is cunning. Soon you will be watching westerns and liking them! You won't even be able to say, "I don't like westerns." You guys ...

Re: ROBERT MONTGOMERY Presents...
Still, I don't know how any woman could forgive Montgomery for killing those other women! Bad boys, indeed! Hey, it's Robert Montgomery for goodness sakes! He's not only gorgeous - he's TORTURED.... a big turn on. I'd lose my head over him..... (GROAN) Oh, and Bronxie, Here Comes Mr. Jordan was my ...

Re: "THE LETTER" (1940)
Hey, Ladies! I'm completely torn! I think they are both great endings. I love the way Maugham swings that line around to the very end to make his final point. It's beautiful to read, but it's not as cinematic. The ending for the movie is a WOW!and just right for the movie. One case where Hollywood a...

Re: "THE LETTER" (1940)
I was just thinking I should go back and read some more Maugham....if I can manage to fit it in between all the movies I have yet to watch.

Re: "THE LETTER" (1940)
OH MY GOSH! YES! Those two seem like really quite traditional casting... I would love to have seen it. That picture of younger Gladys looks a bit like Bette to me...probably the eye makeup... I would dearly have loved to see Gladys in a role that really stretched her and gave her something to do. Wh...

Re: voices
Hi, Ro! This is the first time I've gotten to talk to you here. I am still working out the kinks in how to work things here, so bear with me. Ben's "Aw, shucks, ma'am" would melt me into mush if I ever heard it in real life. I just realized that I didn't read the first page of this thread, so I have...

Re: "THE LETTER" (1940)
Aaaah! The real ending!
Finally we find out what it was supposed to be. Thank you Moira for posting the excerpt from the play. That ending was exceptionally well written.

Re: voices
Ben Johnson has the most soothing voice I've ever heard. I would follow him anywhere.... Now speaking of barrel-chested, Ward Bond comes immediately to mind. I love it when he sings. And Victor MacLaglen also has a lovely large voice. I find Oscar Homolka's voice very pleasant and deep when he isn't...

Re: "THE LETTER" (1940)
Personally, I can't imagine another ending that would be as satisfying or well done. What? Leslie has to go on living with her guilt? That would be too boring. Leslie must go out as dramatically as she came in (it's Bette after all!).... with guns blazing or knives flashing in the moonlight...

Re: THREE MORE IF YOU'RE INTERESTED
Mrsl, I don't know about Dakota and Dallas, but I just watched War Drums about a week ago on my computer. I watched it initially to see Ben Johnson, whom I just discovered. At the beginning, I was smirking at poor Joan's plight, and at Lex, stripped to the waist, being whipped. (I must say, you are ...

Re: "THE LETTER" (1940)
Poor Herbert Marshall. He must have had it written into his contract after The Little Foxes: "No more movies with Bette Davis AND William Wyler---one or the other but not both together. I can't take it anymore." :D He sure does get it between the eyes in those two movies, figuratively and literally...

Re: "THE LETTER" (1940)
You said, "I hope it makes sense". Not only does it make sense, it is marvelous! I never liked the movie much before I saw it during the Fan Programmers event. My best friend in high school loved it, but somehow the greatness of it escaped me for a long time. Your post brought out that greatness for...
