Re: Musical Influences
I was very much in the "Disco Sucks" camp in the late 70s, although my definition of disco would conveniently change when it came to songs done by bands I liked (i.e: Blondie's Heart of Glass and the Stones' 12-inch version of Miss You , but not McCartney's Goodnight Tonight !) The Bee Gee...

Re: MIKE HAMMER (the unsold 1954 TV pilot)
I vaguely remember seeing an episode or two.

It looks as though Archer may be back on the big screen soon.

Re: Giallo
I would definitely and highly recommend Anima persa . While it is giallo, it is very unusual in that there is no sex nor graphic violence, and plays more like an art house horror movie. The slow build allows for plenty of atmosphere, and the mystery offers plenty of unexpected but reasonable twists....

Re: Anita Page and Our Dancing Daughters
I like Our Dancing Daughters a lot. I think it is one of the best examples of the flapper film, and has one of Crawford's best performances. Like intothenitrate, I'm not much of a fan of Crawford, but think she was better in silents than talkies because her penchant for over-emoting is less obvious ...

Details on the reissue of McCartney's Ram , which comes out May 22. http://www.antimusic.com/news/12/April/19McCartney_Ram_Reissue_Details_and_Documentary_Preview.shtml I'm happy to see A Love For You is included. I'm not familiar with the "Jon Kelly" mix, and, while that means it is a rel...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
The other day I saw the very marvelously filmed Scorsese movie " Hugo ", in which Asa Butterfield plays beautifully the title character; what a charsimatic kid. Beng Kingsley impersonates Georges Méliès and Chloë Grace Moretz, Isabelle, the girl who befriends Hugo. Sacha Baron Cohen is ef...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
To me, the German Titanic is all propaganda. The "hero" is the made-up German first-officer character, who single-handedly could have avoided the tragedy, if only the inane British (aka Jewish) sailors would have listened to him. Captain Smith is portrayed as week-kneed, the British are so...

Approaching the hundred year anniversary of her sinking, two new studies suggest that good ol' Mother Nature played a significant role in both Titanic's sinking and provides a plausible reason as to why the California failed to come to her rescue. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/10/science/a-new-look...

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...
From what I've read, Dracula's Daughter was supposed to be an "A" picture, budgeted on par with The Bride of Frankenstein . Whale was scheduled to direct, and it was to feature an all-star cast, including Colin Clive, as well as newcomer, Jane Wyatt as the Countess(!) While I've not read t...

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?
I watched the terrific Spanish thriller, Swindled (2004). It's about a group of con artists who plot to pull off the big score. But, as con men (and woman) will do, they try to also out con each other. Many of the cons turn out to be quite implausible and impossible, but with the film's pacing and a...

Re: Giallo
Perfume of the Lady in Black is an incredible film and Mimsy Farmer hits all the right notes. Great cinematography, scoring, and excellent sense of mood. I absolutely agree on all counts. Mimsy is great, as is the entire cast. That little "Alice" girl gave me the creeps. Just curious, wha...

Re: What are you reading?
I'm reading Dashiell Hammett's "The Thin Man" and I realize how faithful the 1934 film adaptation was to the book. Will watch the film one more time after finishing it. Interesting that you are reading Hammett. I'm currently making my way through the Raymond Chandler novels and short stor...

Re: BRIDESMAIDS
I just feel I have to add one more bit in my own defense. Hi Anne, you don't have to defend yourself to me. My comments were directed entirely at John Farr's article. In your initial post, you make the case as to what you were expecting from the film and why, when those expectations weren't met, yo...

Re: Giallo
Does that mean you liked it? Loved it. Another I just watched, and loved, is The Perfume of the Lady in Black , which is an intense exploration of madness on par with Repulsion . (The two would make an interesting double bill). Wasn't prepared for the ending, although I should have been. Really gre...
