Now Voyager

I "discovered" this movie about 18 months ago, and it shot to the top of my favorite movies list. I even purchased the book at Amazon, it is so old, the pages are brittle. From beginning to end, "Don't let's ask for the moon...we have the stars".... at least a half box of tissues...

no apologies necessary! Sometimes the smallest glitch causes the greatest annoyance, doesn't it? If I haven't said it before, thanks, Jon for this great place. A day without SSO is a dreary day, indeed! :D

Thanks Lynn. Your insights make the movie even more powerful for me. I just watched this over the weekend, and as I was reading your post, it was like watching it right now. Got a little teary-eyed, too! I think this movie and "The Quiet Man" are JW's two best.

Mr. Robinson

Hands down (for me) is "Our Vines Have Tender Grapes" (1945) He put such feeling and tenderness into the part, you just have to believe he was really like that. And considering all the bad guys he portrayed, what a fabulous actor!

Has anyone ever seen "The Captive Heart" with Michael Redgrave? It is the best POW movie I have ever watched. I purchased a rather miserable copy of it from Amazon last year. It is shown infrequently on the History Channel, and if you ever spot it, watch it!

Judith, as soon as I posted that, I knew it was not in keeping with the theme of this thread. I just hated the movie (because it was so sad) and so every time someone mentions it, I see Lisa Kudrow walking over to the tv and turning it off. Keeps me from tear-ing up I suppose. :? so huge apol...

Old Yeller and Phoeb's

Judith, have you ever seen the episode of "Friends", where Phoebe and the crew are watching "Old Yeller"? At the crucial moment at the end, Phoebs gets up and turns off the tv. Seems her mom always did that, and she is completely clueless as to the real ending. tooooo funny.

I know this is silly, but every time Gene Kelley makes that last, grand circle in the rain, I start crying. And when Cyd Charisse does the "Silk Stockings" ballet behind locked doors, I REALLY boo-hoo. Something about dance just gets me every time. I have season tickets to the Kansa...

Hi Larry.

This isn't useless info, it adds a richness to history. Just as we love to hear "inside information" about the stars, stories like this make the people we watch seem much more real.
Thanks for sharing.

Max & Bette

Ah, John, thank you. I have reached a time of life when I'm not sure anymore if I really heard or read something, or it just "appeared" in my head.....  I love Steiner's music in the movie, but I think Miss D. thought it would be more effective (and more attention on her ascent...

Max Steiner's score of "Dark Victory"

When Dick Cavett interviewed Bette Davis, didnt she talk about the score of Dark Victory? I remember hearing her say that either she or Max Steiner was "going up those stairs (last scene in the movie) but by God, not both of us!" According to the story, she was really p***'d off that the d...

Conrad Veidt

I always found him immensely fascinating, even being the worst kind of villain. Every time I watch Casablanca which averages 3 times a year, I hold my breath to see if he shoots Bogie. To me, he's THAT believable. Did you read the post on the other site, about his contract stipulation? According to ...

This is such an interesting read from all of you. As I have been looking at your lists, I realize that many of your favorites are mine, too. I really hadn't put together a list in my mind, but seeing these names got an "Of course!" response. Most interesting to me are the directors. I had ...
