I saw Marianne recently. It's a very fun movie, although being such an early talkie, it isn't the same quality as some of Marion Davies's films from just a year earlier. The over the top acting styles are of their time and take some getting used to. It's interesting that even when she is speaking wi...

He was forced to make a few cuts after the film's initial release. For instance, he removed some scenes in the end that showed black people being sent to Africa as a solution. He certainly toned it down from the novel, I've read a few excerpts. The Birth of a Nation is bad enough as it is, though. :...

I saw Assasination of the Tsar yesterday at a Russian film festival. It was made during the last year of the Soviet union, and deals mainly with the murder of Nickolai II, seen through the eyes of a modern day schitzophrenic who thinks he did the shooting. Interestingly, he projects physical manifes...

Yes, I liked Dorothy's character better than Lillian's. Sometimes I feel she's been a little overshadowed by her sister, film history doesn't recognise her talents as readily as Lillian's. Dorothy did marry unlike Lillian, she was less into her career than her sister. I like Bobby Harron too. Altho...

Thank you metsfan, that's a very nice thing to say! The Phantom Carriage is one of my favourite movies. It is something that is difficult for me to explain, but it works so well for me. My dad didn't like it so much, he thought it was good, in a similar style to Dickens, but that he wasn't in the mo...

Judging only from Grand Hotel, Grabo did not do so well in talkies. She had improved a great deal by the end of the 30's, though. I still prefer her in silents, that was a great medium for her. Try Flesh and the Devil if you want to see what the fascination with Garbo was all about. Joan Crawford is...
