I think the story fares better in this version simply because it was a difficult tale to tell under the production code. But Cortez just sets my teeth on edge. Am I right in thinking that it's only available in a set with the '41 version? Which I already have, so I don't really want another copy. B...

Re: Strange Cargo
I thought the movie was terribly heavy-handed, and (considering its stellar cast) surprisingly dull.ken123 wrote: would like to the members to share their opinions on Borzage, The Legion, Hunter, or the film.

For what it's worth, here were my thoughts on it when I last watched it. I liked it, but it's tough to warm up to when you were raised on the remake as I was. I'm not a great fan of the 1941 version, mostly because I'm not a fan of either Bogart or John Huston. Although it is one of Bogart's better...

My favourite Universal horrors: Son of Dracula (1943), brilliantky directed by Robert Siodmak, with Lon Chaney jnr giving his greatest performance as a genuinely menacing vampire, and it's the first southern gothic vampire flick! Dracula's Daughter (1936), the first lesbian vampire movie. Gloria Hol...

dfordoom, Welcome aboard! I actually have To the Devil, A Daughter sitting on my DVD shelf, just waiting for the mood to strike me. Your little reminder may move it up on the priority list. I have to admit, thoigh, that their earlier (1968) adaptation of another Dennis Wheatley occult pot-boiler, T...

Personally I think Hammer reached their peak in the 70s, when they started to move away from the endless retreads of Dracula and Frankenstein . They made some off-beat and extremely interesting movies in the 70s - Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde , which is actually a clever and original variation on a hac...

Re: Call her Savage, Call her Clara Bow
I saw this pre-code doozie about a year ago and enjoyed your review of the non-stop action alot. The only thing you glossed over was the um, uh, 'suggestion' of bestiality in the wrestling scene between our pal Clara and her Great Dane The scene with the dog was certainly....interesting. It's an am...
