Re: WELCOME TO BRIAN MCFADDEN!
Welcome to SSO today and I have one interesting question - one of my favorite Republic Films and I have seen it in Vancouver, British Columbia on two occasions - is the film back in 1941 called ICE CAPADES featuring the debut of Vera Hrubá. Can you share any information about her? :) Thank you for b...

Re: WELCOME TO BRIAN MCFADDEN!
Hi, Brian! Thank you very much for joining us here. The Catman of Paris (1946) featuring the Viennese emigrant, Carl Esmond (aka Willy Eichberger) is one of the Republic chillers that I have enjoyed despite the obvious limitations of the budget. I also liked the Austrian-born Lenore Aubert , the da...

Re: WELCOME TO BRIAN MCFADDEN!
Thank you, Brian! I would also love to hear more about Curt Siodmak's involvement with Republic when you have a moment. I'm so glad you mentioned that Christy, because many fans only associate Siodmak with Universal around this time. He was indeed involved with Republic and two of his films for the...

Re: WELCOME TO BRIAN MCFADDEN!
Recently Olive Films released a quality DVD of Orson Welles' Macbeth , which is one of my favorite Republic titles. :) [Prior to that, it was available on a not-so-great Korean DVD.] May be a good sign that more Republic films will be coming from Olive. That certainly is a good sign and I hope we'l...

Re: WELCOME TO BRIAN MCFADDEN!
Glad to see you here, Brian. 1. My impression is that, unlike Monogram (until a name change to Allied Artists) and PRC (until it was part of Eagle-Lion), Republic released one or two movies each year with bigger budgets than its usual fare. 2. There are many Republic film noirs that are marvelous. ...

Re: WELCOME TO BRIAN MCFADDEN!
I thought I might begin our visit by asking what Republic horror film you feel was most influential in inspiring you to create your latest book, Republic Horrors: The Serial Studio's Chillers, and why you were so fascinated by the film originally. And thank you in advance for your response. It's an...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?
This sounds like delightful, no budget fun! That Marshall Thompson was in some of the strangest movies! Real fun movie, but you are so right Red about "No Budget!" Take a very close look at the film's "monster" below. The suit was made for a small person to wear, but the role we...

Re: "Inner Sanctum" (1948)
This is a great little noir. Too often it gets confused with a series of "B" films put out by Universal. Each of the series entries had its own title, but Universal always emphasized the "Inner Sanctum" connection, as shown below:

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...
It looks like Svengoolie has come up with a winner this weekend. MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE. The old one! This cult classic from the early 1930s features Mr. Lugosi as a mad doctor (Really?) experimenting with people, apes, and well...you know what to expect! The movie is primitive; not always excit...

Re: Welcome to Michael Hoey, Our Guest Author for 3/15 & 3/16
I've wanted to ask this ever since reading your Pearl of Death story. Universal’s B’s always looked so good because they had the advantage of re-using standing sets. Your dad appeared on the same lavish castle set in S.H. Faces Death , House of Fear , and The She-Wolf of London . I know you were ver...

Re: Welcome to Michael Hoey, Our Guest Author for 3/15 & 3/16
I started out reading your books because I was such a fan of your father's. Very early on, however, I realized I had become a fan of yours as well! Of course, I hope you realize that you've made many of us extremely jealous by your stories about being on the set of Pearl of Death , meeting Nigel Bru...

Re: Behind Locked Doors (1948)
STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT is definitely an important introduction of the Mann to come and one that should be seen. I reviewed it here . And I certainly agree that THE MADONNA'S SECRET is another John Alton wonder. An atmospheric gem oddly reminiscient of Edgar Ulmer 's BLUEBEARD . It is Exhibit A that...

Re: Behind Locked Doors (1948)
Brian, from what I understand based on Moore's book, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and interviews, he not only grew (understandably) resentful of the "Dickie" diminutive, but he was pretty fed up with acting in general by the time he appeared in Sergeant York (1941) as a teen. I am curious...

Re: RITA HAYWORTH - The Love Goddess
I fell in love with Rita when, as a kid, I saw her on the cover of a record album entitled "Big Hits from Columbia Pictures." Until you mentioned it, however, I wasn't familiar with "The Money Trap." I noticed several publicity stills from the movie on Ebay, and even though she's...
