Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

One particular film I have been reluctant to buy on BRay is "Design For Living" (1933), because i find superb the print used for The Gary Cooper Collection; But maybe in the end...I'll buy it anyway I doubled-dipped on it and am very happy I did. The Blu-ray offers considerably more detai...

Re: The Beatles

Last night I watched the blu-ray of Yellow Submarine. Restored in 4K digital resolution, each frame was restored by hand and it shows. The color leaps out at you (almost literally), and that 3D effect when in Liverpool (the image shows the rooftops and then glides down to street level) is breathtaki...

Re: Noir Films

For some inexplicable reason I had a hankering to see a Diana Dors film so watched the British noir from Hammer, Man Bait (1952). Dors is quite good as the girl-gone-bad, who works at a bookstore. (Unfortunately nobody comes in looking for a rare Ben-Hur .) Intrigue, blackmail, murder are all handle...

All the Kevin's of the world agree,
you'd be better off with Transformers 3.

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

For me, Rules of the Game is one of the greatest films ever made, and certainly the best of 1939, but it does suffer from Citizen Kane syndrome. The plot works on many levels and is rewarded with multiple viewings. The cinematography, particularly the deep focus, became hugely influential, and Renoi...

Re: The Beatles

From what I understand, there were a number of McCartney albums remastered in 2010/11 including: Wild Life; Flowers in the Dirt; Pipes of Peace and Press to Play . There may be others but in any case, I think they are only available as downloads and do not include any bonus material. I haven't heard...

FLORINDA BOLKAN?!! WHOA!! Now THERE [/u] is a name I haven't heard uttered in more years than I care to remember: http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt270/CineMaven/CINEMAVEN%20FEMALE%20ACTRESSES/FLORINDABOLKAN.jpg I have only seen her in one film. And I thought she gave a fantastic performance in ...

Re: The Beatles

For me, Ram is the best of the remastered McCartney albums to date. (The others, so far, include McCartney, McCartney II and Band on the Run .) Done by the same folks who remastered the Beatle and Lennon discs, the remastering stays true to the original recording but adds greater separation, allowin...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Almost missed the favorite 70s lists (should it have its own thread?) but, for what it's worth, here are some of my favorites, which I didn't see already listed. (Way more than 10, but who's counting?) Straw Dogs French Connection Monty Python & Holy Grail/Life of Brian Alien The Last Waltz Man ...

Re: Musical Influences

The Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows" is only one chord but an interesting lyric and an unbelievable production make it an event for three minutes. Think of the chord as simply a drone. The rhythm adds implied notes and the tape looping also adds counter-rhythms and melodic underpinning that...

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

I watched Hideo Gosha's Three Outlaw Samurai , an exciting and extremely entertaining film. Like the better known Kurosawa Samurai films, Three Outlaw Samurai is essentially a western. But while comparisons to Kurosawa are valid (particularly the humor found in Yojimbo and Sanjuro ), the violence an...

Re: Musical Influences

The Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows" is only one chord but an interesting lyric and an unbelievable production make it an event for three minutes. That's funny. I've been noodling around with an arrangement of this song in Logic (trying to add the monks Lennon originally wanted), but I play...
