Re: The Next Voice You Hear
I can't help but like this little movie. It's silly and preachy. But the whole small town, close family, tunnel vision atmosphere appeals to me. It IS a lot like 1950's TV. It's like 1950's society; maybe not the real one, but the one we see fictionalized. It's short, guided and to the point. Family...

Re: Hemingway on Film
Almost everybody I know likes Papa's writing. It doesn't do much for me. Always seems like he writes philosophy more than fiction. As for the movies, Siodmak's THE KILLERS is our big winner. The later filming is good also. But the rough, blunt, black and white telling gives the story exactly what it...

Re: Ruthless (1948)
Your comments really make me want to see this movie! I haven't seen much of Ulmer's work. (I'm not sure there IS much of it!) RUTHLESS sounds like a great next step.

Re: Raoul Walsh
My name is Bond. Hamish Bond. I am one of those who gives more credit to other filmmakers than to the talented Walsh. But when he was hot, he was on fire. I must reiterate the examples in the original post. WHITE HEAT is one of the great action films of all time. So many scenes are unforgettable. HI...

That reminds me. FRIGHT was originally published under the name George Hopley. That's one I hadn't heard before!

Re: CORNELL WOOLRICH : King of Noir
I hope it's OK to revive this old thread. I've just joined the board! As for the books, I like RENDEZVOUS IN BLACK better than BRIDE WORE BLACK. The plot and the format are almost exactly the same. But I find "Rendezvous" a little more entertaining. A few years ago, the Hard Case paperback...

Jack Favell,
What an insightful point you've made! How many times have we wandered through utter chaos, thinking, I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON!

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?
I'm cheating. I haven't watched THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN recently, but I love an excuse to comment on it. This superb fantasy is my favorite of the genre. It's a close race with THEM! ISLAND OF LOST SOULS is sensational. But this inspired Richard Matheson story, perfectly staged by Jack Arnold, ...

I hope it's OK to revive this thread on my favorite "Big Monster" movie! This is my first time on SSO. This precisely structured adventure is simply outstanding. The first couple of scenes, arguably the best in horror films, set the stage beautifully. As always, the suspense is in what MIG...

Re: Frankenstein
Hi, everybody! This is my first time on SSO. Some of you will remember me from another message board. I'll take my time learning my way around. Get to know the mechanics of it all. Let me know if there are issues with reviving old threads, repeating comments, or dribbling oatmeal down the side of my...
