I found a copy of Sgt Pepper's in a box of old records belonging to my wild hair Uncle Terry. That was my intro to the Beatles and I've been a fan ever since. We have a rule in my car--"Thou shall not change a Beatles song" I don't have all the background facts--I just love the songs. :D F...

Interesting. I'm still undecided, despite strange experiences in an old house I once lived in. It was built in 1880 and we did a lot of renovations. The first year we lived there my son (who was about 3) would occaisionally ask me about the "blonde man on the stairs." Needless to say, I ne...

As a Dietrich fan, my first exposure to Jean Arthur was A Foreign Affair . She was wonderful. Her shock and horror seeing all the American servicemen with frauliens as she's on the grand tour of Berlin, then later getting herself picked up by two of the most reprehensible miscreants in Berlin! And I...

I watched A Woman of Affairs on Garbo day. I hadn't seen that one. God, Garbo was amazing in her silents. She did everything from young exuberent girl who is sure everyone loves her to jaded woman of the world, to the tragedy of losing a baby (and her mind). Wasn't so impressed with Two Faced Woman ...

I'd like to add Red Headed Woman . Wow. Not only was Jean Harlow BAD, she didn't even suffer for it! OK, she loses her rich husband, but she goes to France and finds a nice rich old man to pay the bills and she gets to keep Charles Boyer. Would love to see Love me Tonight and Madame Satan . DOn;t su...

Another movie which makes fun of Nazis is "To Be or Not to Be." Very funny movie starring Carole Lombard and Jack Benny poked fun while the Nazis were still in power, instead of 25 years later. I'm not positive, but I think there was some controversy over the film when it was first release...

There was a "sequel?" Who's in it? Is it as thorough and interesting as the first book?

Silent Stars and A Woman's View by Jeanine Bassinger are both good informative books. The first takes a number of silent stars, including the Talmadge sisters, Swanson and Pola Negri, Tom Mix and William S Hart and even Rin Tin Tin and gives an overview of their careers and films. The second discus...

Moviola

I read in another thread that there was a movie version of this book? Does anyone know if it's available on VHS or DVD? I really enjoyed the book (and just about anything Garson Kanin wrote, actually) and would love to see the film, even if it's bad.

Thanks for any info!

I read a book once called The Girls , mostly because it featured Marlene Dietrich and Tallulah Bankhead pretty prominently. In the preface, the author frankly says she has no actual proof of anything she claims. Apparently, she combed through reams of newspaper and magazine articles, FBI files and s...

I've been a Beatle's fan since I was 12 and dug an old copy of Sgt Pepper's out of a box of garage sale stuff at my grandma's (it was my rebel-biker-going-straight-to-hell uncle's album). My son knew the names of all the Beatles by age 2 (and had a goldfish named Ringo). We have a rule in my house (...

How about the "I'm engaged scene" from Some Like it Hot?

Joe: But, you're *not* a girl! You're a *guy*, and, why would a guy wanna marry a guy?
Jerry: Security!

Or the tango dancing between Joe Brown and Jack Lemmon-or the final scene "Nobody's Perfect!"

The Quiet Man

Wow. I finally watched this movie the other morning and was pleasantly surprised. I usually avoid John Wayne movies, but this was one of those movies everyone tells you to watch (Like Random Harvest , which I still have managed to avoid). Beautiful scenery--looked just like Ireland should look (but ...
