Re: *CANDIDS*
That "Gene Tierney & Friend" photo begs for some comment about "claws in the back", but then seeing Cary and Heda on the bed together - hmmm. No. Not really.

MrsL, I like that "smarmy" comment because that's what I get, too. But completely positive. As in Smart-Charmy. I have to admit the "operatic singing" always has me scrambling for some other activity during those moments but I love Irene Dunn's later films where she'd take her go...

Re: Kay Francis
I enjoyed Emperor's Candlestick but I fear they can toss William Powell into any film and I'll find something to enjoy. We'll watch Comet Over Broadway this evening, we think. John Litel's in prison?!! I'm glad his daughter Nancy never found out about Kay and this other daughter!

Not to worry! CSI: OSHKOSH. That covers Nebraska AND Wisconsin. Now, if LAW & ORDER will switch to street names... "First Street", "2nd Avenue", "Waterford Lane", etc. How does "CSI: Chorley" sound? Hmmm... I wonder if the threat that Kevin Costner would h...

Re: The Wizard of Oz
We didn't get the new set, but in early December, Austin had a nice two-day showing of it at one of the theaters. It was the second time our young kids had seen it, and I keep thinking I'd name WIZ OF OZ as the ultimate Hollywood film. Maybe not the best in any one aspect, but it's got a great suppo...

Re: Universal's Vault Series
Like you, I think "price" is the huge obstacle. If not the marketing expenses, the next largest expense is 'shelving and warehousing' costs. Without these, I can't see any excuse for anything that exceeds Alpha Video's $5-Per prices. We ended up with five sets of Warners Archive 10-for-$10...

Re: Kay Francis
We just finished several of Kay Francis films. (I still resent being forced into captivation by watching her - she's got this odd beauty, something about her face that isn't quite perfect, yet seems so compelling for me to stare at. And then, to start padding our shelves with yet another delictable ...

Re: Blue Lamp/Dixon Of Dock Green
There's one BIG thing wrong with CSI: YONKERS. Ya think Staten Island, The Bronx and Brooklyn would stand for it? NO WAY. They'd burn the place down! (White Plains, at that time, would probably launch missiles and flatten out Bronx & Brooklyn, simply because White Plains wouldn't want Yonkers re...

Re: Did Louis B Mayer really sabotage John Gilbert's career?
I've avoided Mayer and Warner Bros biographies because of the rumors of sabotaged careers. I hate it when stars screw up their own careers - "Do they really need help?!!" Apparently so.

Re: Europe gets AFRICAN QUEEN on Oct 7, 2009
Once again, from the I'll Believe It When It's In My Hands Department... Every few months, we get to resurrect AFRICAN QUEEN release news. In the US and even on BluRay, "March 2010" is the latest release date for AFRICAN QUEEN. They've even got artwork. But I've seen that all before. I don...

That photo of the sharp-looking men with Jane Wyman - and all I noticed was "How regal Karloff looks..." It's a shame James Bond was brought out about 1935 because I know who I'd have nominated for his first roles. "My name is Bond. Karloff Bond." And he'd be facing Spectre in a ...

JackF's comment about missing "the wide open spaces" of Oklahoma. May, 1999... http://celebrating200years.noaa.gov/datasets/weatherradio/image3_650.jpg I don't like this photo - it misses the incredible scale. This shows about 10-home-lots, and I believe the actual strip-of-destruction was...

MichJ, yes, a long list of substance abusers that may or may not get what they deserve. I have zero sympathy for any of them - I've spent most of my life in an industry surrounded by those types and seldom do I see justice meted out on Earth. I dislike having days, weeks and now months of TV coverag...

I'm going to sneakily locate these. My father- and mother-in-law live across the park from us, and if I can snag any of these classic Brit films they were fond of, it always makes for a most-excellent gift.

SR, I'd also heartily recommend STOP MAKING SENSE as an ultimate filming of a concert performance. I'd also place MAD DOGS & ENGLISHMEN as a #2 recommendation over all the far-more popular ones you'd listed. I've also been incredibly impressed with the SMILE DVD with Brian Wilson and his orchest...
