Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

Today I watched "As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me" (2001) directed by Hardy Martins. It is a German film about a German POW who escaped from a Soviet prison camp in Siberia in 1949 and in 1952 crossed the border into Iran. The opening of the film was rather rushed. The film is adapted from ...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Glad to see someone else liked "Hitchcock." I had a blast when I saw it earlier this year. Can't figure out why some critics hated it. I think Paramount sold "Psycho" to Universal a year or two after it came out. I had always thought of it as a Universal film. Apparently the disl...

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

Today I watched "The Organizer" (1960) directed by Mario Monicelli. I had heard good things about this movie, but it managed to exceed my expectations. In some ways, this is like Monicelli's "The Great War." It is a historical film about a serious subject but with a number of com...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Today I watched "10 Things I Hate About You" (1999) directed by Gil Junger. I didn't see this movie when it first came out, but I had heard great things about it. It is "The Taming of the Shrew" set in a 1990s American high school. It is actually a lot of fun. Some subplots appea...

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

Today I watched "Babette's Feast" (1987) directed by Gabriel Axel. I skipped this film when it first came out, but over the years I have heard it praised a lot, so I gave it a chance. It started slow, and it had a lot of voice over narration at the beginning, which nearly put me off the mo...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Today I watched "What Price Glory" (1952) directed by John Ford. I had never heard good things about this film. But, I thought, how bad can a John Ford movie be? Heck, I even like "Two Rode Together." This movie just didn't work. There were some good moments, such was when Quirt ...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

On Friday, my son and I watched "Safety Last" (1923). Hard to believe that this movie is 90 years old. Very enjoyable. What struck me this time was how simple it all was. Harold goes to the city and wants to impress his girl. He gets into three situations of discomfort/scariness: he is alm...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

Yesterday I took my son to see "Thor: The Dark World." It was good. Maybe not as good as the first "Thor" movie, but it was still very enjoyable. For all the talk about Tom HIddleston as Loki, I was more impressed with Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Hemsworth gives the movie its core, ...

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

Today I watched "Hamsun" (1996) directed by Jan Troell. This film looks at the WWII career of Knut Hamsun, a Nobel Prize winning author, who collaborated with the Nazis. He was in his 80s when this took place. Max von Sydow gives a fine performance as this crusty old man, and the film itse...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Yesterday I watched "Carry On Cleo" (1964) directed by Gerald Thomas. While I really liked "Carry On Screaming" (1966) when I saw it a couple of weeks ago, "Carry On Cleo" struck me as only so-so. I really loved Kenneth Williams as the foppish, ineffectual Julius Caesar...

Re: Happy Halloween!

Great Peter Pan photo!

We had a lot of trick-or-treaters this year. A surprisingly large number of boys were superheroes. The girls tended to be fairies or cheerleaders. Apart from one stunning vampire, very few horror costumes this year.

Today I watched "The Monk" (2011), directed by Dominik Moll.

I left my comments under Sci-Fi and Horror, but I enjoyed it very much.

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

Today I watched "The Monk" (2011) directed by Dominik Moll. This is a very good adaptation of a scandalous 1798 Gothic novel by M. G. Lewis. The movie avoids/plays down the sensationalism of the novel, and what emerges is the tragedy of people destroyed by pride. (This was the first time I...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

I wouldn't say "Curse of the Cat People" surpasses "Cat People," but it is a wonderful movie that has some very scary scenes. Definitely worth seeing. It is one of the best from the Lewton unit.

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I really enjoyed "Gods and Monsters" when I saw it several years ago.

Today I watched "Carry On Screaming" (1966) which I commented on in the Sci-Fi & horror section. I really enjoyed it, my first Carry On movie.
