Re: The Last Action Hero

I thought about including Vin Diesel on the list but I've been very disappointed that he never used his star power to transform his good ideas into good movies. Clive Owen, on the other hand, is a spectacular actor, but really needs to stay away from the action flicks - I must be the only person on ...

Re: The Last Action Hero

Andy Lau might just be my current favorite action star, taking the reigns from previous favorite Chow Yun-Fat. As far as Western actors go, though, there just aren't as many willing to go where the East is willing to. The Japanese and the Chinese still have a sense of adventure - albeit very differe...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Oh, man. I want to punch the guy in the face who told me Synecdoche was a Gus van Sant film - I've avoided it for that exact reason and now I find out it's Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut?

Thanks for the heads up. I feel silly for missing it - I'll rent it as soon as possible.

Two out of twelve a half it does not make.

I suppose we will have to agree to disagree. Your loss.

Re: Sci-Fi That Makes You Think

What about Sunshine ? Children of Men ? Cowboy Bebop ? Solaris ? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ? Innocence: Ghost in the Shell ? Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow ? The Wild Blue Yonder ? Idiocracy ? V for Vendetta ? Watchmen ? Battle Royale ? Plus many, many more, and those are just fil...

Re: 'Round the World Weather Report

It was 85 on Friday when we drove back into town. Yesterday it was nice and warm in the 70s until the thunderstorm came rolling in, then it dropped 25+ degrees in an hour into the 40s/50s. Why didn't anyone tell me this happened?! I was caught waiting on public transit in the cold, windy and rainy w...

Re: Ain't it the Truth

I'm glad you have such an intimate knowledge of what all families in America do. As usual, I defer to your obviously superior knowledge of parts and people unknown; knowledge obviously gained through the use of your omnipotent superpowers. How did you gain those? After 2 husbands, six children, and ...

Re: Ain't it the Truth

Hollis, I for one am more than happy to admit there are things about the past which I greatly admire. For example, the complete lack of CCTVs and warrantless wiretapping. Nevermind the fact that the past equivalent is basically Hoover and the FBI infiltrating domestic organizations and destroying th...

Re: Ain't it the Truth

Hey, I love reading this board and interacting with folks. What I don't like is this place's vibe that yesterday is better than today. This is something most folks here are guilty of - even folks that I admire and respect. I realize the forum is called Silver Screen Oasis for a reason and I am not t...

Total Bloodbath

This weekend is Night Marchers [/b] weekend! Kendra and I are traveling to see them in Kalamazoo on Thursday, coming back to Chicago for a performance at the Subterranean on Friday, taking a day off Saturday because their show in Minneapolis is too far away, then driving up to Milwaukee on Sunday to...

Famous People in "the Loop" Borders

I wasn't going to make a post about this but now that it's happened twice in a row I feel the need to mention it. A few weeks ago a distinguished older gentleman comes in very early (before 10am) and buys a magazine. I am busy with another customer so I cannot help him, but while he is checking out ...

Re: General literature question

They wanted us to read it in my freshman year English class. However, after our awful, terrible, really downright pretty not good teacher viciously misinterpreted Great Expectations with what I can only call vengeance, I completely wrote off her entire syllabus and decided to read my own books, hand...

Re: What are you listening to?

If that is an honorable position to hold then I gladly accept your nomination. If not, how dare, Sir, I will see you on the fields of dueling at dawn tomorrow! I think that 2001 looks best as seen in the largest, most high quality format possible, be it an LCD television or on the big screen. That i...

Re: What are you listening to?

Your favorite music, now digitally remastered to bring out all those great little tidbits that no one even knew existed because the equipment to listen to them properly on hadn't even been invented yet and to sound even better than it did when it was cut on eight track, four track, no track tape for...
