Annual Hollywood shindig

I've always been a big fan of The Oscars. Several years ago I even took a (solo) vacation to Hollywood (from Memphis) during The Oscar weekend. It was the year "Platoon" won. I stayed at the Hollywood Holiday Inn (Hollywood Blvd/Franklin) and had to drive downtown to The Dorothy Chandler P...

Movies 101

TCM has always been a treasure trove for me. In my youth, I spent more time reading about movies than actually seeing them..."classics-"wise. It's the exact oposite now. It is a treat to have them playing on my TV...24/7. "Discovering" gems is the most fun. I also love reading th...

I love that story, Mike!
All is well, Lynn. Did SueSue tell you about my new job? There's a great documentary just waiting to be captured on film...a la John Ford. Anxious to pitch it to you. Call me.
BTW-What do you think of "The Apartment?"

"Shut up and deal."

The sub-heading for this forum is "Isn't Romantic Comedy Redundant?" It's Valentine's Day and the movie I chose to watch is one that fills that prescription...with a terrific dose of bitter cynicism. Billy Wilder's "The Apartment." I haven't met a Wilder movie that isn't in my fa...

"All I really need is the girl..."

Don't forget about Gavin Macleod singing and dancing in "Gypsy."

I saw it (for the first time) on a big screen-in the '80's at The Orpheum in Memphis, TN-and was blown away...without firing up a joint. I later bought a (used) VHS copy and watch it when I'm in the mood for a ponderous, gravity-defying "opus." Kubrick, IMHO, is a master at making t...

Imitation of life...

I couldn't agree more, Ann Harding. "Far From Heaven" is a brilliant homage to Sirk. I also believe that Sirk (and Ross Hunter, for that matter) would have dealt with those taboo subjects if the '50's studio had allowed them to. I'd like to add that the performances in "Far From Heave...

The awful truth...

If I were ever fortunate enough to be chosen as a guest programmer-I would choose two films from the '60's. It was an explosive (and "exposed") decade of movies...filled with classics from seasoned veterans as well as raw, experimental material from new talent weened on '40's/'50's studio ...

Bells and banjos

I'd forgotten that Natalie worked (in the pet department!) at Macy's. I'm sure that must have been an intentional nod to "Miracle On 34TH Street?" That brought back memories of hanging out in the pet department at Woolworth's. I really enjoyed the whole theme of "introducing" us ...

Thanks, Mr. Ark, for your review of "Killer Of Sheep-"and for including those great photos. I taped the movie and I'm looking forward to watching it tonight. (Love the new avatar!) ChiO-Terrific list of fave directors...I'm in complete agreement with your statement about their work standin...

Return Of The Log Lady

Another "Twin Peaks" fan. I'm always giddy and a little surprised with the casts of a David Lynch project. "Twin Peaks" ran the gamut-from Ray Wise to Piper Laurie (wearing an eyepatch!) to Peggy Lipton. He also used some interesting directors on the series-including Diane Keaton...

Moonlighting On TCM

Another November guest programmer I was quite pleased with (and surprised at her "classic film" knowledge) was Cybill Shepard. It seems like she really listened to Bogdanovich and learned a lot from his library of film books...and met many "players" from the Hollywood of yester-y...

Kiss, kiss, bang, bang!

That is an interesting choice to co-host The Essentials. Too bad she's no longer with Marilyn Manson. He'd be a great host for TCM Underground... Rose was so cool in "Planet Of Terror" (from the Tarantino/Rodriguez collaboration, "Grindhouse") with her "machine gun leg."...

Thanks, Chris
Normally I would have looked it up first on IMDb, but that's so hard to do with WebTV. :?
