Re: Are they part British actresses
sometimes i have difficulty in picking my top British actresses. i would have top of my list Olivia De Havilland, who along with sister Joan Fontaine was born in Japan of British parents. i think that counts, but others might argue as their fully American as they've spent all their working lives th...

Re: Marylin and Diana
You know, I do not really think that Diana was a bad actress. In Yield to the Night she was very good. It was my first Diana Dors film, and she did impress me. Not so much with some of her other movies.. too many were just bad material to begin with. She really had a bad luck with her movie career. ...

Re: Joan Crawford
Joan Crawford.. one of these women I still haven't made my mind up about. I like to watch her films.. mainly the 30s ones. I think she was not a bad actress, she improved herself, she was a worker and she got better. Having seen her in some of her very early films (Our Dancing Daughters, for an exam...

Re: Celia Johnson, a great Dame
I've seen Celia only two times so far. Of course, I've seen her in the wonderful Brief Encounter. One of my favorite movies, her portrayal was so sensitive, believable.. she was absolutely brilliant. The other movie I've seen was A Kid for Two Farthings where she played the mother of the child. It's...

Re: Loretta Young
Loretta Young... I like her as a comedian... not so much as a person. I do not know that much about her though. So, correct me if I am wrong with anything I'll say. Of course I have also heard about the story with her swear-jar...I know this story with Robert Mitchum being the one telling her to f**...

Re: Tallulah Bankhead
Main Street to Broadway. I've never seen it myself... but then I have to say I am not getting TCM so chances are small anyway. Her part couldn't have been that big, but it would be very interesting to see.

Re: Marlene Dietrich
There is an interesting documentary that she made at the end of her life, simply called Marlene and directed by Maxmillian Schell, it's a strange documentary, I don't think it does her any favours, for a woman who knew everything about the camera and how it presented her and how she safeguarded tha...

Re: Marlene Dietrich
I'll be fascinated by your findings, what an interesting way to read about someone. Do you hire the books from the library buying only the ones that are out of print or are you a book hoarder like me? Marlene seems to be a good place to start. Ah, our library would only offer one book about Marlene...

Re: What are you reading?
I've started Stephen Jacobs book on Boris Karloff, this looks like one worth buying, lots of research and attention to detail and with plenty of pictures to illustrate. The first time I hear about that book. I looked it up, and noticed it is an "authorized biography". Nothing wrong with t...

Re: Marlene Dietrich
Despite all her affairs or rumours of affairs I can help liking her, there's never been anyone else quite like her, she's refreshing. I recently read a book about Hedy Lamarr, it mentioned Jean Pierre Aumont, on his arrival in Hollywood he was sampling the local delicacies too obviously and was tol...

Re: Tallulah Bankhead
I haven't seen many Bankhead pictures besides Lifeboat , The Cheat and The Devil and The Deep . Recently, I read a hilarious story about her in Paul Henreid's memoirs . Tallulah had been invited to a party. She was sitting on a sofa, necking a young actor. Then, Lillian Gish entered the room, dress...

Re: Marlene Dietrich
It's very interesting what you've said about Marlene and Rita, it's at odds about what I'd read MArlene was like. I was pretty sure that Orson was one of Marlene's conquests around the time of the magic shows, some which Rita helped with and then I think was replaced by Marlene after Harry Cohn tho...
