Re: Kennedy Fifty Years On

It was not just America that was affected by Kennedy's death. It was a shock for everyone and it changed many many things for people living as far away as Australia, not the least being that we unquestioningly followed LBJ into the Vietnam war. "All the way with LBJ" I cannot help thinking...

Re: Bechdel test

I agree the definition is pretty basic. If they put in the criteria the conversation had to be meaningful, or not about clothes, meals, children or parents I am not sure any movie (except curiously the Marilyn Monroe ones) would get by. I wonder what the Wizard of Oz would have looked like if one of...

Bechdel test

I was reading about this being used to classify Swedish films as pro-feminist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bechdel_test To pass the test It has to have at least two women in it, who talk to each other, about something besides a man Apart from obvious "women's movies" it seems very hard to...

Re: Westerns

One of the key pleasures of westerns for me is the story lines lend themsleves to man ( and occassionally woman) faced with moral or heroic choices that would normally not be part of a life setup. The joy of the western is that the setting is inherently dangerous and even when it is presented as saf...

Re: Ben Johnson

Thanks Paula

You realise how tall Ben was in that photo with Robert Armstrong.

I am hanging around Changi airport waiting for planes so Ben pictures are a very nice way to fill in the time (when there is free internet)

Re: John Ford

It will be my first job when I get back from overseas to watch The Last Hurrah (I'm off to Vietnam and Cambodia on Wednesday). Its really exciting to be able to look forward to a "new" John Ford film. The extras look interesting. I always get curius about commentaries to hear the views. So...

Re: CARY GRANT

I was feeling like a romantic fix last night so I rewatched An Affair to Remember. (A small bonus was because I visited New York for the first time last year, I got to look at the backgrounds.) One of the things that struck me was how much the film was about adults. It must have been the audience th...

Re: John Ford

I've never seen The Last Hurrah and its a long time since I have seen The Long Gray Line so that is really good news.

I wonder what the extras are going to be.

Thanks for the information

Re: David Frost has died

As part of a tribute they showed a very long hour and ahalf interview Frost did with Michael Parkinson quite recently. There were many clps in it, including Nixon and Nelson Mandela and Robert Kennedy. Amazing stuff showing Mandela and Kennedy giving a straight answer to an honest question. Would no...

That was lovely. I rather like the irony of the man who "shot" Liberty Valance.

Re: The Domestic CAT: Feline at its finest!

Cats and books go together. I'm a librarian so I know :) These are some rules for library cats. Dewey's Job Description 1. Reducing stress for all humans who pay attention to him. 2. Sitting by the front door every morning at 9:00 am to greet the public as they enter the library. 3. Sampling all box...

Re: John Ford

I am not sure if anyone has seen this. I always like Will Hutchins notes. He tells some very funny stories and I guess he has gone up in my estimation because he clearly loves Ford films. http://www.westernclippings.com/hutch/hutch_2013_8.shtml I guess despite all teh bad things that are said about ...
