Re: Bette Davis

I wouldn't see Colbert as "Margo" either. Stanwyck or Crawford would seem choices before Colbert. And I really like Claudette. (So glad you are back Judith.) Thanks Chris. I do agree that the entire picture would probably have been quite different with Colbert in the role, and would likel...

Re: WHAT MUSICALS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Can anyone think of movies that did a better job of recreating 19th century theatrical traditions? Moira, I'm thinking of something with W.C. Fields. I think it's called "The Old Fashioned Way" (?) It's about a theatrical troupe, the plays they put on, and their life on the road. I always...

Re: Summer Under the Stars August 2014 Schedule on TCM

Thank you for your kind words, King. I caught only the middle part of the Hodiak-Ball-Nolan thing. I was unfamiliar with this one, and surprised to see Dassin listed as director -- not quite his kind of thing, you'd think. I thought it seemed interesting, but even the 15 or 20 minutes or so I saw pr...

Re: *CANDIDS*

Yes, Grant Williams did have a few meaty roles. He could have been maybe an Alan Ladd type, if he'd gotten the appropriate breaks. I've been unable to find much information about him, so I don't know what held him back. Could have been any number of things, I suppose. At least we have some interesti...

Re: Summer Under the Stars August 2014 Schedule on TCM

Moira, I watched "Tomorrow is Forever" this morning. That movie really gets to me. You know very well that I'm hardly the sentimental type, but I was tearing up and sniffling as the story unfolded. As usual, Colbert had wonderful clothes, and looked great in them. She had such a sense of s...

Re: *CANDIDS*

Ah, Joe -- Grant Williams. Wasn't he pretty? I don't know what kind of an actor he really was -- he was generally the handsome boyfriend in the background, or the young solider who gets it early in the action. He did a lot of TV as well, but we never really got to see what he could do, except in &qu...

Re: Bette Davis

I've often wondered what "All About Eve" would have been like with Colbert. I feel a lot of anger in Bette Davis' Margo -- I don't see Colbert as an "angry" actress. Her version of a strong woman in control was quite different from Davis', but was just as effective. Any thoughts ...

Re: Summer Under the Stars August 2014 Schedule on TCM

I've been away from SSO and, actually, I haven't been looking in on TCM regularly for some time either. So far, I haven't given SOTS as much attention as I thought I would. The offerings of many days are films I've seen zillions of times and don't necessarily want to watch again. On the other hand, ...

Re: CAROLE LOMBARD

Hello everyone on this thread; I'm back from a long hiatus. I'd like to add a note of dissention here -- while I certainly don't hate Lombard, I can't honestly say I'm wild about her either. It's really interesting how an actor can seem so different to different viewers. One of the things I've never...

Re: *CANDIDS*

Hi all. With Nancy and Moira's help, technology has turned, for the time being, from foe to friend. Thank you all for your warm wishes. It's be a very difficult last year or two. Because of my daughter's increasingly bad health, I decided to take early retirement so that I could be home with her and...
