Though I love him in the 1940s ( Holiday Inn and Bells of St. Mary's are faves of mine), I'd recommend some of his really early stuff, like Going Hollywood or We're Not Dressing. He was such a jazzy force in those, that you can see why Artie Shaw called him "the first hip white person born in t...

One of the things I most admire about Claudette Colbert was her willingness to play the mom of young adults even while she was still young enough to be a romantic lead herself. Greer Garson was the same way. Much as I like Norma Shearer, I've always rolled my eyes at her insecurity about doing that.

How about BM of 1940, then, Marco? Sure sounds like Eleanor's voice! (which I realize was the point of choosing just the right ghost singer) And Rosalie ? It's Marjorie, really? I've the soundtrack to that, and it just seems so much as if EP is singing "A Strange New Rhythm in my Heart."

I think that standing/dancing backbend was something of a trademark of Ellie's. Vera-Ellen also had a lot of flexible acrobatic and tap ability. I recall one number in particular from The Belle of New York --it's the summer boardwalk part of a pastiche of Currier and Ives settings. At one point Fred...

That's Entertainment! sequences

Is there, anywhere online or in a book, a list of all clips used in That's Entertainment! (1974)

I had never even noticed Keanu Reeves until about two years ago when I happened upon a 1995 movie being shown on TV called A Walk in the Clouds. Could have been a better movie, but he played a wonderful and romantic role in it. I'm something of a connoisseur of movie kisses, and his are very nice, I...

Everyone associated with Steve Allen was so talented. How I wish that his various shows were available on DVD.

It's sad to lose yet another of the ensemble...

I still have never seen BM of 1936, but Powell is wonderful in BM of 1940 and Born to Dance, and I agree that she gets knocked too much for her limited acting range. She may not be as subtle as some, but I find her very winning in her roles. To me her singing voice is very appealing, and I love her ...

I'll watch any Meg Ryan romantic comedy any time it comes on, no matter how many times I've seen it. There's just something about all of them: their romantic city settings, her goofy charm, her sweet and odd little outfits... I first noticed Meg Ryan when she played Betsy on "As the World Turns...

I think Mickey Rooney is amazingly talented. The guy could sing, dance, play the drums, and do hilarious impressions (my personal favorite: Carmen Miranda--I laugh so hard at "Mama Yo Quiero" from Babes on Broadway, every single time!). I've never read his autobios and don't know all that ...

Can anyone shed any light on the films she's passing judgment upon in the promos for "The Essentials"? Which does she think is "so overrated"? I can't remember her other reactions, but I do keep wondering to what each one refers!

An intoxicating film, and as Mr. Rubini says, I'm always amazed that it was not filmed on location.

My favorite was Niven's demonstation of Curtiz's equally inaccurate grasp of profanity. He once got furious at Niven and another actor for seeming supercilious toward him and bellowed, "You think you know f--- all, but you know f--- nothing!" That one made me fall off my chair!

One of my favorites from Hello, Frisco, Hello: You'll never know just how much I miss you You'll never know just how much I care And if I tried, I still couldn't hide my love for you You oughta know, for haven't I told you so A million or more times? You went away and my heart went with you I speak ...
