Re: Holidays in Hollywood with Mary Mallory & Karie Bible

Moira, this is Mary. The earliest holiday still I have seen is from the late teens, in which a small studio posed their entire staff around a small Christmas tree. It was more like a Christmas card. I have seen a few from the late teens, including one of Dorothy Gish sitting on the ground in front of...

Re: Holidays in Hollywood with Mary Mallory & Karie Bible

Sue Sue, Believe it or not, it was easier to find 1930s-1940s images than the 1920s or 1960s images. Many of the photos came from eBay, where vendors are selling off vast newspaper archive photos. These required much more time and looking under individual stars' names, but they brought much of the w...

Re: Holidays in Hollywood with Mary Mallory & Karie Bible

Hi, This is Mary. Lzcutter, one of the really interesting things for me in doing the book was finding some wonderfully composed holidays stills by early stills photographers Frank Hoover and Nelson Evans, who were two of the major photographers of the teens and early 1920s. I had never seen holiday ...

Re: Holidays in Hollywood with Mary Mallory & Karie Bible

Obviously we wanted to cover the history of these type of publicity photographs, as well as the wide range of stars who posed for them. There were some stars we wanted to include we could find no photos of, and for others there was a plethora to choose from. Through the photos, you can see how the h...

Re: Holidays in Hollywood with Mary Mallory & Karie Bible

Hi, Thanks to all of you for inviting us! Our ideas about the book evolved out of our collections. Karie's birthday is Halloween day and she collects on that. I collect vintage photographs from the silent period or by the great stills photographers. We both had some holiday photographs in our collec...

Re: Welcome to Mary Mallory Our Guest Author on 10/25 & 10/26

Lynn,
The oldest commercial structure still standing is the 1901 Lasky-DeMille Barn. The 1880 Claussen residence at 6100 Winans Drive just outside of Hollywoodland is the oldest residence; it was moved and placed in its current locations around the time of the opening of Hollywoodland in 1923.

Re: Welcome to Mary Mallory Our Guest Author on 10/25 & 10/26

Lynn,The Hollywood Sign has survived a lot over its 90 year history. It was built as a temporary billboard to promote the Hollywoodland development in late November 1923, constructed out of telephone poles, sheet metal, pipes, and wire. In Dember 1923, a car made the drive up the hill to the Sign, a...

Re: Welcome to Mary Mallory Our Guest Author on 10/25 & 10/26

Thanks Lynn! I appreciate you all for having me! The Garden of Allah apartments were Spanish-style bungalows spread out over lawns with a pool and bought by the great theatrical/film actress Alla Nazimova in the 1920s and became the place for literary or other artistic guests to stay when working or...

Re: Welcome to Mary Mallory Our Guest Author on 10/25 & 10/26

Jack, Thanks for writing! There are many early silents I enjoy: D. W. Griffith films, Selig/Essanay/Thanhouser films, Sennett films for their locations, directors Lois Weber, Abel Gance, later Erich von Stroheim, Rex Ingram, Clarence Brown, actors Ronald Colman, Milton Sills, Thomas Meighan, Buster ...

Re: Welcome to Mary Mallory Our Guest Author on 10/25 & 10/26

Rita, So many great places to see around Hollywood/LA, don't know if I can limit it to 10! Here are some I would definitely not miss: Hollywood Heritage Museum (Lasky-DeMille Barn) handprints/footprints at Grauman's Chinese Grauman's/Egyptian Theatres (El Capitan possibly) Silent Movie Theatre (Cine...

Re: Welcome to Mary Mallory Our Guest Author on 10/25 & 10/26

Christy, Yes, the HRC is wonderful, particularly now that they have money to acquire things! Not only do they have the DOS and Gloria Swanson Collections, but also Robert DeNiro and Marie Windsor's, along with Woodward and Bernstein's papers! The building was smaller and not as nice when I was there...
