Re: Ben Johnson

Greetings, I don't have much to add -- just wanted to wave hello and say, "I'm a Ben Johnson fan too!" He was such a wonderful presence onscreen, a fine actor, and one of the most natural and unpretentious performers ever. My introduction to him many years ago was Wagon Master. A nice way ...

Re: MURNAU, BORZAGE AND FORD AT FOX

This is embarrassing. Mention here of the Dumont book inspired me to take it off the shelf and leaf through it -- of course I ended up at the Lucky Star chapter, and there I found the very reference I'd made above to Caligari! Except that was observed in print by Mr. Dumont back in 1993. I've read t...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Hi, Wendy! Love your icon. :) Ben Johnson is so adorable. :) (That is Ben Johnson... yes?) Michigan, I didn't find anything idiotic about Susie or Bill or Bettina. D.W. Griffith may have wanted to satirize his characters a little, but really, he's all on their side. The idyllic little town and the c...

Re: MURNAU, BORZAGE AND FORD AT FOX

Thanks charliechaplinfan, I already have the Dumont book -- and the Lamster book too (Souls Made Great Through Love and Adversity: The Film Work of Frank Borzage), though Lamster is now superseded by Dumont IMHO. I'm a big opera/classical music fan -- have been for 35 years -- so listening to John M...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I watched True Heart Susie yesterday. What a sweet movie.

True Heart Susie goes onto the list of "movies in which people cough -- significantly."

Coughs, and guns hanging over the mantlepiece or tucked in a drawer, are harbingers of things to come in the movies. :)

Re: MURNAU, BORZAGE AND FORD AT FOX

I really liked Song o' My Heart though John McCormack's acting comes through only in his beautiful singing. :) But that Borzagean collapse of space uniting the two thwarted lovers during his concert is the kind of thing that really gets to me. *sniffle* By the way -- I know Borzage was influenced by...

Re: MURNAU, BORZAGE AND FORD AT FOX

Charliechaplin fan, make that a two-woman Charles Farrell fan club, OK? :) I think he was a wonderful actor... http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/9915/ls3769.jpg ...who just was not served well by the talkie era. I saw Tail Spin on Fox Movie Channel the other day and Farrell had a generic supporting r...

Hi Nancy and Charliechaplin fan -- I worship Charlie by the way. (As well as Keaton, Lloyd and the other Charley -- Chase that is.) :) Y'all can call me Paula. ;) Off for more exploring... so many movies, so many threads! ;) Unfortunately there is not much in the way of silents here in Atlanta anymo...

Re: "The Merry Widow" (1925)...

Hello, this is my first post to the Silver Screen Oasis board. I have no idea what took me so long to find you all, I've been a big classic film buff (including silents) for many years. :) Ah... The Merry Widow. I LOVE this movie, no doubt partly because the first time I saw it was a 35mm print proj...
