Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

I am glad to see that you enjoyed the films, Alison. :) I find Le Bonheur particularly interesting as it shows Boyer in a very ambiguous part. At the beginning he is an anarchist (and caricaturist). He decides to shoot a famous movie star, Gloria Stuart (G. Morlay) as a gesture of defiance. But his ...

Re: Seconds (1966)

I just discovered this thread. I watched Seconds about a week ago. But, unlike many of you, I must admit I didn't like the film that much. I felt the script was not quite what it could have been. The characters felt rather empty to me. I still don't know why this banker decides to have a second life...

It's certainly among my favourites in Boyer's filmography. He is very relaxed, having fun and doesn't try to project the '...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Has anyone else seen the 1943 German "Titanic"? Yes I have. It was broadcast a few days ago over here. It's a typical piece of Nazi propaganda. The owner wants to win 'the Blue Ribbon' at all cost even if it means risking the life of the passengers. The only heroic figure on board is a Ge...

Of course. Most of its silent library is lost. But lawyers always cover everything -extant or not. Just in case.

I can't wait for the next performance of the film in London. It should be on November 2013. :P

Re: The whiny thread

You probably noticed I haven't been posting much recently. Well, I'm having some trouble with my Internet provider. They cut me off by mistake and it's taking for ever to get my line back... :? At the moment, I'm using my (kind) neighbour's connection. But it's not ideal.

Well, that's a coincidence, I was rewatching Hell's Hinges (1916) yesterday with the fabulous William S. Re: The Artist (2011) a contemporary silent

Yes, I saw a good copy of THE BIG PARADE on TCM a few years ago. As important as that is to film history, it doesn't do much for me today. I imagine it was quite impressive for its time. Really? I think it's still one of King Vidor's best picture. Show People is also a King Vidor picture showing th...

Re: The Artist (2011) a contemporary silent

Well, I am amazed. This is the first time a French picture won an Academy Award. It's also the first time a French director won an Oscar. Same for a French actor (who doesn't even speak English)! several actresses did but never an actor... And it all became possible because of the lack of la...
