They actually have remade Casablanca a couple of times, at least in spirit. Havana, with Robert Redford and Barb Wire, a “futuristic” version staring Pamela Anderson in the Bogart role! Not to be missed... (I kid....)

Yes, that's the one. It does start very slowly, and if you've seen old video versions, the aspect ratio may not be correct, so you may have missed much of the picture. Trust me, Tati does take his time, but the overall effect is well worth the investment. At the very least, fast forward to the resta...

I know technically this isn’t where this should be posted but I just saw Jacques Tati’s masterpiece Playtime for the first time, and it is one of the funniest “silent” films I’ve ever seen. Essentially a number of set-pieces (or shorts, even) the film is linked by Tati’s Monsieur Hulot wandering thr...

Chris, I was also interested in this set and found this review of it on DVDtalk http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/33614/catherine-deneuve-5-film-collection/?___rd=1 Since I have most of the Deneuve films available (here in the US), I still may nibble. But I must admit, they don't sound all that great. ...

A thoroughly enjoyable “winking” homage to the Western, Ruth Ann Baldwin’s 49-17 (an abysmal name) succeeds because none of the characters know they are in a parody. Filled with all of the requisite Western characters and situations, Baldwin has her actors play everything relatively straight, which ...

Hollis,
Although I’m relatively new to the board our paths have crossed a few times. You even reminded me of some bands I had, indeed, forgotten (I’m listening to Naked Aggression’s Bitter Youth as I write).

Visit when you can. And a profound thanks for your service.

Continuing my survey into the works of early women filmmakers, I watched Alice Guy-Blaché’s The Ocean Waif . A poor young woman flees from her brutal step-father, taking refuge in an abandoned mansion. Coincidentally, a rich author, with his nebbish valet, searches for a secluded property to write h...

Arguing who was first in punk is like arguing who was the first in heavy metal ( The Kinks ? All Day and All of the Night rocks pretty heavy for 1964). Sure the New York Dolls were first, and their influence was felt for sometime (although their reunion album leaves much to be desired). But I had th...

The first time I saw Passion was on a video tape I bought from a company that prided themselves on their Silent film presentations, saying they were all presented with “acuview” or some such nonsense. Anyway, gullible me, I purchased the tape (along with a few others) and put it in as soon as it arr...

Does Rock ‘n Roll High School count in this thread for great contemporary soundtracks? (l suppose it could be considered a musical.) Dazed and Confused . Another great soundtrack to a great movie. I rather liked Juno and Crash was okay (I assume you are not referring to the Cronenberg film, which wa...

Okay, you are all in for a treat. Over in the Desert Island Discs thread I listed as one of my must have albums the debut on Columbia Records from The Laughing Dogs. They were the opening act for the first concert I ever saw, and youtube just happens to have a clip from that actual show! Enjoy! [you...

You are right about Scorsese, he is another who uses contemporary tunes to great effect. Layla and Can’t You Hear Me Knocking in Goodfellas comes to mind.

I forgot about Diner. Brilliant film. Brilliant soundtrack.
