Silver and Ursini's Film Noir Reader 4 has two essays on Gun Crazy , Gun Crazy and Violently Happy: Gun Crazy , plus Covert Narrative Strategies to Contain and Punish Women in The Big Heat and The Big Combo . In Film Noir (Robson 2005), the author analyzes the eighteen movies that he argues advanced...

I will leave the indepth synopses and analyses to Mr. Arkadin, but to put your mind at ease.... Killer of Sheep refers to the protagonist's employment in a slaughterhouse, but the story takes place (except for two or three shots) in the neighborhood. I cannot readily think of a more humanistic film....

I wish I could say Johnny Staccato because I am such an admirer of John Cassavetes, but, alas, I never saw it. I guess that leaves Jim Rockford in The Rockford Files . Between Maverick and The Rockford Files , Jim Garner was the coolest guy ever to have a leading role on a TV show who wasn't named S...

During a typical weekday, I watch: Seinfeld (2 or 3 episodes -- was and still a fan), The Andy Griffith Show (2 episodes, but only if Don Knotts is involved), The Dick Van Dyke Show , Taxi , and Cheers . Of current sitcoms, I do enjoy (though not a rabid viewer): Scrubs , 30 Rock , The Office (right...

I had a similar moment a couple of months ago -- spending a hour in the musty store, finding nothing of interest, while leaving I glance at the as-of-yet-unpriced new arrivals, and there it was... Cornell Woolrich: First You Dream, Then You Die (Nevins), and in beautiful condition. When I asked abou...

Sorry for dredging up an old thread, but cut the newbie some slack.... Siodmak is wonderful, Wilder superb. Preminger is great. Lang has quantity and quality. Welles...well, my favorite director, period. But this thread cannot die without a mention of Anthony Mann . STRANGE IMPERSONATION (1946) T-ME...

Thank you for the gracious welcome, Moiria and Dewey. Always happy to watch and read about film noir . Joseph H. Lewis is an interesting problem for auteurists -- the films are distinctive, but I have some difficulty comparing SECRETS OF A CO-ED with TERROR IN A TEXAS TOWN . There probably is a comm...

My favorite has become Gun Crazy , which I watched five times in December and probably another five times earlier in the year. In some respects, it seems odd to like it so much in that some of the typical film noir elements are missing or relatively minor. Most of the action occurs during the day. I...

Each poster has made excellent points in favor of his or her choice. Unfortunately, if I had been a member when this started, one of the movies would never have received a vote from me and I would have stopped voting for the other around Round 3 -- though I certainly understand why most people love ...
