"The Pajama Game" (1957)

One of the truly unsung musicals of the 1950s, with a remarkably convincing performance from Doris Day, an impressive movie debut by John Raitt and wonderful choreography by Bob Fosse. Carol Haney (from the record breaking Broadway production) makes a wonderful front office employee and with her num...

A favorite of mine for many years. One of John Ford's best films. There has been a tendency to downgrade "How Green Was My Valley" recently because it beat out Citizen Kane for Best Picture of 1941. It turned out to be John Ford's only win in that department. Because Citizen Kane now is la...

It has to be "North to Alaska" (1960). If you like your comedy broad and unsophisticated "North to Alaska" is your kind of film. The Duke has some of his funniest screen moments in this film. There's a whole routine with Stewart Granger and Capucine trying to make Wayne jealous a...

I got a few guilty pleasures including a Universal B film "Girls in the Night" (1953), the musical "Little Shop of Horrors" (1986), and especially "Cobra Woman" (1944). Maria Montez plays twin sisters, one good, one evil, on a tropical island.

Whenever I hear that tune I think of that final scene in the movie. Cagney's Ma humming and fluffing the pillows awaiting his return as his brother goes to open the door...

"Call Her Savage" (1932)

One pre code that impressed and shocked me was "Call Her Savage" (1932) with Clara Bow: A free-form blend of western, romantic comedy, tragedy, and everything in between, "CALL HER SAVAGE" takes (sometimes jarring) turns from comedy to pathos, creating an absolutely unique experi...

Thanks for the heads-up, Dewey. I am looking forward to "Decoy" as I just love the femme fatale in noir films.

At 86 years old the Brooklyn born Mickey Rooney is a show business legend. The versatile actor has earned his place in the sun.
Through ocassional ups and downs he has always managed to revive his career and bounce right back.

There is a scene in the film where Sabu is all decked out in a splendid outfit with earrings which reminded me of Carmen Miranda. Actor David Farrar who played the sexy Mr. Dean was quoted: [on Black Narcissus (1947)] "I can honestly say that every day of shooting was an exciting adventure, mai...

Marlon Brando

A glowing review from the Orlando Sentinel in Florida of the Marlon Brando Documentary: Hal Boedeker | Sentinel Television Critic Posted April 29, 2007 A new profile of actor Marlon Brando is -- with apologies to Tennessee Williams -- stellar, stellar. Brando examines this iconic actor, impassioned ...

I'm crazy about the scene in which Rita Hayworth belts out 'The Heat Is On" in a smoky place surrounded by soldiers. Very steamy stuff. This was one of her best roles along with "Separate Tables". I believe that "The Sory on Page One" is a 20th Century-Fox film which could ...
