Re: The Gardening Shed

Re: College Profs on Film: Good, Bad or Just Ewwww?

There was this professor in a 1973 film. The actor reprised the role on TV from 1978 to 1986. I started law school in 1978, and there were two kinds of law professors at that time: those who emulated Prof. Kingsfield and those who tried not to, but couldn't help themselves. Not "good" or &...

Re: HOT OFF PRESS!

I'm at a loss since T.E. Lawrence was dead before the start of WWII. That would have been quite the adventure in the Middle East.

Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

If I were the emcee on Improv Night in the Great Beyond, I have no idea who I have have opening among Lenny Bruce , Andy Kaufman , Jonathan Winters and Richard Pryo r. But I do know that, for their benefit, I'd have Robin Williams closing because otherwise the audience would have no energy left for ...

Re: SAMUEL FULLER: Film Is a Battleground

Okay, you Fuller Fans (or the Fuller curious) in the NYC area -- Dave Kehr (very late of Chicago) is curating a Samuel Fuller retrospective at MoMA...starting tonight! I have seen the documentary or HATS OFF (his first screen credit as a writer - but it's Poverty Row with John Payne , so how bad can...

Something that will make him suffer for years? Something relatively simple?

Has anyone suggested marriage?

Re: Upcoming Criterion Releases

It's Christmas in August!

Yesterday, I pre-ordered Criterion's upcoming (finally!) release of Cassavetes' LOVE STREAMS.

And Siegel's RIOT IN CELL BLOCK 11 while I was at it.

Thereby replacing the so-so copies I have.

Re: LISTS

It's neat to conclude this survey with ChiO picking the same top three. I'd have given odds that would never happen. Who woulda thunk? And ChiO, thanks for pointing out the Conrad Hall connection to Richard Brooks' two most visually remarkable films. Always happy to help imprint cinematographers' n...

Re: LISTS

Red, Watching WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? , I get a sense that it is real - not "realistic", which conveys to me that the actors are trying to portray "real", but that it truly is real. And "real" gives me a sense of improvisation - not that there isn't a script to ...

Re: LISTS

With 1966, I find it hard to find ten English language films of those I've seen to rave about (other than the first two on my list). Five non-English language films that would otherwise be among my ten favorites would be, in order of preference: AU HASARD BALTHASAR (Robert Bresson), ANDREI RUBLEV (T...

Dear Knitty,

My nine movie quotes preceding Red's: First three from ANNIE HALL, the next three from PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM, and the last three from SLEEPER. All written and spoken by Woody Allen. Now I feel really old: 50 directing credits in just under a 50 year directing career.

Re: Noir Films

Sometimes one watches a movie with no particular expectations, but just because. Then... Wow, WOW, WOW! Thus it was with THE LONG WAIT (Victor Saville 1954). A hitchhiker is picked up on Route 66 at night. The vehicle rolls off the road and bursts into flames, but the hitchhiker is thrown clear. He ...

From the pen and mouth of one of my favorite humorists: The country makes me nervous. There’s crickets and it’s quiet… there’s no place to walk after dinner… there’s screens with the dead moths behind them… you’ve got the Manson family possibly, you got Dick and Perry…. - Alvy Singer Don't you see t...
