Frank Borzage is certainly my all-time favourite director. :D I like very much his MGM period with Maggie Sullavan ( Three Comrades , The Mortal Storm , The Shining Hour ). But, I would like to see the release of rarer features such as Man's Castle (Columbia) and Little Man, What Now? (Universal). I...

Unfortunately, King's silents are not Fox pictures. Just two examples:
The White Sister was an idependant production (Inspiration Pictures) distributed by Metro now owned by Warner/TCM.
Stella Dallas is a Goldwyn/UA film owned by MGM/UA.

I have to say that I enjoy more Henry King's silents and early talkies than his later XXth Century Fox films. To me The White Sister (1923), Tol'able David (1920), Stella Dallas (1925) and The Winning of Barbara Worth (1926)are all masterpieces. I also like his Americana films such as State Fair (19...

Prestige (1932)

Moira mentioned this interesting early talkie earlier on. I watched it again yesterday. After this second viewing, I feel it's definitely a remarkable feature. http://plasticage.net/gallery//albums/userpics/Prestige3.jpeg http://plasticage.net/gallery//albums/userpics/Prestige2.jpeg http://plasticag...

I know this is a great debate: visual versus dialogue. In general French film historians are very much in favor of visual only . I certainly disagree with this approach. I too like some films for their scripts even if they are visually not exciting. As for Joseph Mankiewicz, he is also one of my fav...

I have never seen this picture, but I would like to, one day. I read about it extensively in Frances Marion's memoirs ( Off With Their Heads ). She wrote the script and it was entirely based on her own experience in visiting prisons and penitenciaries. She based the Wally Beery character on somebody...

Perhaps I should watch it again with your point in mind. Still, poor Ann Harding was cast in SO many films by these two hacks, Harry Beaumont and E.H. Griffith, it's terrible!!! She deserved the best directors around such as George Cukor. Alas, it wasn't to be.... :? Both RKO and MGM cast her with '...

When Ladies Meet ('33) is actually one of my favorite pre-codes and I much prefer it to the remake with Joan Crawford, Robert Taylor and Greer Garson. I discovered When Ladies Meet (1933) recently and it was a huge disappointment... :( mostly, the complete lack of direction from that non-director, ...

http://plasticage.net/gallery//albums/userpics/normal_59_0.jpg I have now watched the 2 DVDs in their entirety. This new DVD set from the German Film Museum is definitely excellent. 8) DVD-1 offers an excellent transfer of the extant footage of The River with Mary Duncan & Charles Farrell. The ...

It's true that Stars in My Crown is a bit of a piece of Americana as well as a western. I usually like a lot films that belongs to various genres: when you watch them you never know what's going to happen... I also included Pursued which is in equal measure film noir, psychoanalytical drama and west...

I am not a great fan of 'top-lists', but I find this one rather fun, being a fan of westerns. :) Without any particular order: Devil's Doorway (1950) Pursued (1947) Colorado Territory (1949) Stars in My Crown (1950) Lonely Are the Braves (1962) Across the Wide Missouri (1951) Johnny Guitar (1954) Th...

I was really struck by his totally non-violent attitude when I compared the two Beau Geste . While Colman gives his character a genuine concern for his brothers as well as a tenderness towards John when he dies, in the remake, Gary Cooper (no matter how much I like the actor) gives a traditional gun...
