To mrsl re 'Deadwood'

mrsl; I've wasted a couple of days trying to think of something clever to say about your discovery of Deadwood . That was the wrong approach. I simply say: Stay with it. Its worth it. Tolerate the profanity and the low view of Humanity that is sometimes on display; there are also some very encouragi...

CM, judging from the insights you've squirreled out about The Unforgiven (a film I've watched piecemeal, too seldom, and too long ago!), it seems to me it would be the perfect "center-piece" to run between The Searchers , and Flaming Star . Whaddaya think? Klondike; No disagreement here. ...

Thanks for the information on "The Unforgiven." I need to see it again. I think Huston hated "Roots of Heaven" and "Barbarian and the Geisha" more than "The Unforgiven." I read a book of Huston interviews, and he actually discouraged people from seeing those ...

I have been jotting down a few notes on The Unforgiven for a couple of weeks with a thought to posting something on moirafinnie's 'Cinco de Mayo' (movies made in Mexio) thread. This new thread seems more appropriate. / My own first experience with this movie: At age 17 I walked into the theater in t...

After having watched Anthony Perkins in Goodbye Again the other day after avoiding many of his appearances in movies for a long time, I was struck by the fact that the poor guy was one loosely held together mass of ticks! His head bobs, blinks and stutters probably did indicate his understandable u...

Daryl Hannah had a downright distracting habit early in her career that I don't remember seeing recently. Coincidentally, it is caught perfectly in her IMDb photo. With the camera full on her she would focus screen right (audience left), then break that pose, face the camera or the other person, and...

Musical Westerns?

Red Garters (1954) Rosemary Clooney, Jack Carson. A musical
spoof of Westerns. Would have worked better as a 30-minute skit by
Carol Burnett & gang. Not worth 91 minutes.

Re: The brass-carpeted West

Only in the movies are shooters never seen to save and pocket the spent shells or cartridges ("brass") after target practice to be reloaded with powder, primer and slugs to be used again. . Just watched "Nevada Smith", and Brian Keith tells Steve McQueen to "Pick up that br...

back from eternity.

Mr. A; Agreed. I saw BFT about age 14. Was especially impressed with Steiger. The character got control of the pistol and then made a case for himself as the one who should decide the fate of all the others. He made decisions the audience could agree with. He made the man a sympathetic character.

Pick Your Tarzan

The first time I saw a Tarzan movie, the star was Lex Barker, and he became the difinitive Tarzan as far as I was concerned. Johnny Weissmuller had already become Jungle Jim, doing pretty much the same stuff, only wearing khakis and a pith helmet. Jock Mahoney was 'The Range Rider' on TV, and he had...

canine traits

"Asta", the canine star of the /Thin Man movies, had a couple of traits I remember. 1. Could't pass a lamp post. He marked his territory every time he went on a walk wilth his people and/or their friends. They would chat along, sometimes with dialogue that actually advanced the plot, and A...

Marking time.

I'm just waiting for the new seasons of The Wire (HBO) and my man Dexter (SHO). There's very little in Network TV that I find time for anymore, outside of the 'Law & Order' franchise. The CSI shows sorta jumped that shark in the last year or so, and Criminal Minds is beginning to wear thin. Like...

The brass-carpeted West

Only in the movies are shooters never seen to save and pocket the spent shells or cartridges ("brass") after target practice to be reloaded with powder, primer and slugs to be used again. This is pointed out in Quigley Down Under : With an ocean between him and his gun shop, and using an e...
