Re: Essential?

Of the four, I would consider only TWENTIETH CENTURY to be essential. To some extent, whether one likes it or thinks it's funny is irrelevant, at least in my conception of "essential" (I can think of a number of films that I'm not crazy about, but I'd still consider essential because of th...

Re: October Schedule 2014

but William Conrad has a chance to shine as he "goes rogue" Isn't he wonderful in -30- ? He makes poor David Nelson look like a deer caught in the headlights. And slap me upside the head, but watching the clip from THE D.I. made me think of Barney Fife and Sgt. Carter ( GOMER PYLE, U.S.M....

Re: October Schedule 2014

There are some goodies. Of the less often shown ones over the next week (all times CST): Saturday, Oct. 4 2:00pm – Peeping Tom (Michael Powell 1960) – A photographer is a serial killer of women, but the film can be seen as the travails of an artist trying to achieve perfection, failing and being rej...

Saw this episode for the umpteenth time tonight and it still causes my jaw to drop.

Who said noir can't be funny?

Re: The September 2014 Schedule for TCM

What did Dennis do that was memorable, except for THE LEOPARD MAN Perhaps it's just a trivial matter of taste, but: HANGMEN ALSO DIE! (Fritz Lang 1943) T-MEN (Anthony Mann 1947) RAW DEAL (Anthony Mann 1948) WALK A CROOKED MILE (Gordon Douglas 1948) ABANDONED (Joseph Newman 1949) WOMAN ON THE RUN (N...

Audrey Long, who brought us a double dose of Noir by her acting and marriage to the author of The Saint, has died.

Re: Fellini's Roma (1972)

I'd suggest starting with I VITELLONI (1953) to get a feel for the early, neo-realistic Fellini , followed by 8-1/2 (1963) because it falls into the dreaded "Oh, you really should see it" category. But you really should see it. There are several others worth viewing, but those two should g...

Re: Bad Movies You Love

I remember reading years ago that Keefe was one of the most disliked people in show biz -- can't recall the details, though.
Ann B. Davis talks about The Keefe Brasselle Show and more here. It provides a couple of clues as to the love for Keefe.

Re: Favorite TV Shows

Why is swearing "realistic"? Is it because swearing actually occurs? Sure it does. But not swearing also occurs. I frequently go through days without hearing anyone swear (well, except on TV). I find it fascinating that we often think of things that generally are in poor taste (e.g., swear...

Re: College Profs on Film: Good, Bad or Just Ewwww?

Caught an Argentine film noir last night: THE BLACK VAMPIRE (Roman Vinoly Barreto 1953). Based on Fritz Lang 's M . The child killer even whistled "Peer Gynt." The child killer's occupation? A professor (that's what he was called even though he taught in his apartment) of English as a Seco...
