:D Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks Orchestra performing live for Keaton's THE CAMERAMAN is as good as it gets. They are one of the finest groups in th world at this sort of thing. The Nighthawks score to SHERLOCK JUNIOR is excellent, and by all rights the film should be on DVD and Blu-ray with that score. sadly it isn't. Neither is THE CAMERAMAN. These guys were mentioned as possibly re-creating the missing portions of the Vita-Phone score to Colleen Moore's SYNTHETIC SIN. I hope that happens. But ever more so I wish they would hier Giordano and the Nighthawks to score the restored Colleen Moore feature HER WILD OAT (1927), which I have been waiting some 4 plus years to see. The film also boasts one of the early appearance's of Loretta Young in the movies.

Although I will never be able to attend the Festival, due to my bad luck that my company's Annual Shareholders' Meeting takes place roughly at the same time than the Festival (unless I get another job!)....a very dear friend of my from CT will attend!!! And she told me she would be my eyes and ears; my special reporter. I'm so happy for her. She has told me that I have piqued her interest in Classics...after recommending to her "Midnight" (1939), "Kiss Me Kate" (1953) and many more....So I have a new convert, who's been enjoying the Classics from some time ago!!

Great that you have a new convert, Fernando! Hope your holidays were spectacular...

I am so looking forward to this year's festivities, and can't wait to see old friends and make some new ones!

Don't forget about Wednesday, January 12th!

TCM is airing the Robert Osborne interview with Luise Rainer along with The Good Earth and The Great Ziegfeld:

It will air twice in the evening.

Receiving Oscars for her efforts in The Good Earth and The Great Ziegfeld,
Rainer, a brave centenarian, will be honored on her 101st birthday. In April of
2010, she flew over the big pond, volcanic clouds of ash and all, in order to
make history again and to remember some of her stellar moments, both on
and off the silver screen.

Savvy cineaphiles were staggeringly agape at Rainer's loving demeanor and
charmed by her candor. Robert Osborne's interview and discussion with
such a legend was one of the highlights of the Turner Classic Movie Festival.

If you have ever entered a darkened movie theater looking for pieces of eight
from the treasure chest of someone's soul, tune in on Wednesday evening
for a wealth of riches.

More news about the TCM festival... oh my stars and bars!

Leslie Caron will be on hand for the opening night world premiere of the 60th anniversary restoration of AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (1951)

Debbie Reynolds will introduce a screening of THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN (1964)

Jane Powell will appear at screenings of SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS (1954) and ROYAL WEDDING (1951)

Shirley Jones will introduce CAROUSEL (1956)

In celebration of filmmaker Roger Corman's 85th birthday, he will host a special screening of his cult classic THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (1960)

Filmmaker, author and historian Kevin Brownlow will introduce Erich von Stroheim's silent drama THE MERRY WIDOW (1925), with the Dutch composer Maud Nelissen performing the North American premiere of her original score live with a ten-person orchestra

The world premiere of the 60th anniversary digital restoration of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (1951)

The West Coast premiere of the newly restored LA DOLCE VITA (1960), presented in partnership with The Film Foundation and Gucci

A screening of SHALL WE DANCE? (1937) as part of our tribute to George and Ira Gershwin

***

Will Debbie remember our close encounter at Symphony Hall here in Atlanta? (I know I posted that story around this board somewhere...) Not that I will actually have a chance to get close to her. ;) I have a friend who is mad mad mad for Jane Powell. He's not going to the TCM fest, though... alas. :(

This sounds like so much fun!!!

I just knew that they would arrange for Leslie Caron to be there for the opening night gala!

And Debbie introduces one of my favorites....The Unsinkable Molly Brown!!!

And Jane Powell!!! I love Seven Brides For Seven Brothers...

And Kevin Brownlow!! And Shirley Jones and Carousel!

Will Debbie remember my close encounter with her in New York when she was arriving in a limo to see Woman of the Year? I know I must have bored somebody with that story here at the SSO!!

Paula, we both had brushes with Debbie greatness!

Hello Everyone,

I just read today that "The Constant Nymph" (1943) is to be released on DVD at last...

Don't you think it would be a great idea for TCM Festival to schedule this picture in their program and bring Joan Fontaine out and introduce it??? !!!

Can somebody here with influence with TCM strongly suggest this???

I am not surprised that The Constant Nymph (1943) and Night Flight (1933) are to be featured parts of this year's TCM Film Festival. If there is any way to arrange it, I'm sure that TCM would love to have Joan Fontaine present for this event, though it might be a bit difficult for Fontaine to participate publicly due to her advanced age (though that didn't stop Luise Rainer, did it?).

I hope that she does participate if it becomes possible to feature The Constant Nymph, since her performance was exceptional (as was that of Alexis Smith), and she has often cited that movie as one of her favorite roles. I do know that TCM has been trying to find a way to broadcast The Constant Nymph (1943) for several years. As you can see here, both these films may be scheduled for DVD release and I'm crossing my fingers it is so.

Thanks for sharing this great news, Larry.

Wow those are great news!! It would be great if TCM showed "The Constant Nymph" & "Letter from an Unknown Woman" back to back with R.Osborne hosting and Joan Fontaine as the interviewee!! It woould be a dream, and something to record and keep forever.

Hi Moira & Fernando,

I have now heard a rumour from one of my LA contacts that "The Constant Nymph" is going to be featured at the Festival and the DVD release date is unknown. I think it would be great advertising to sell copies at the Festival.

As for Joan Fontaine attending:
She just lives up the coast and I've heard that she is in quite good health. She wouldn't have to fly across the Atlantic and then America to attend as did Luise and Olivia a year or so before her....
I hear she can be quite witty and charming and she would be glamourous (something the world could use about now!!)...
I'm sure Robert Osborne would be trying his damnest to coax her to appear and it would be wonderful tonic for her to see & feel the love and admiration she has from all of us.
It would certainly spark her endorphines and be a natural 'high' for her in her senior years....

Also, "A Letter from an Unknown Woman" would be icing on the cake!!

We can only hope..

Two sought after movies, I noticed in the article you linked in Moira that Hoopla is mentioned too, if that was released too it would be a great hat trick.
