The Scarlet Letter (1934)
1h 10m | Drama
I also got a strange joy out of seeing some totally inappropriate costumes among the villagers, including what appeared to be a group of Conquistadors (!) loitering in the background.

It's amazing that, despite these horribly incongruous elements, the film works pretty well."

 :smiley_huh:
The "conquistadors" aren't an anachronism. Those background extras were portraying colonial sentries, and the hats (helmets, really) they wore (which most people do associate with the Spanish conquistadors) are called cabassets, derived from the Spanish morion helmets. The English adopted them in the 16th century, and the Pilgrims brought them with them to the colonies. They have been found in archeological sites at Jamestown, for example.

Here's a postcard, available on eBay, that shows a colonial sentry from Plimoth Plantation.

BTW, I found the film to be uneven. Agree about the comic bits being out of place, but most of the acting reminded me of a junior high school play...

Long Day's Journey Into Night (1982)
TV-14

Over the course of one day in August 1912, the family of retired actor James Tyrone grapples with the morphine addiction of his wife Mary, the illness of their youngest son Edmund and the alcoholism and debauchery of their older son Jamie. As day turns into night, guilt, anger, despair, and regret threaten to destroy the family.

Thommie Blackwell as James Tyrone Jr.
Ruby Dee as Mary Tyrone
Rhetta Hughes as Cathleen
Earle Hyman as James Tyrone
Peter Francis James as Edmund Tyrone

Director
William Woodman

"....This performance of one of O'Neill's several masterpieces sorely needs to be released on DVD. It is simply superb!! All four actors acquit themselves mightily, but Ruby Dee gives an interpretation of the tragic Mary Tyrone to break your heart. Earl Hyman as patriarch James Tyrone is also magnificent. O'Neill's text is adapted only slightly to accommodate the African-American characters-- changed from the original Irish-American. I have no doubt O'Neill would totally approve of the non-traditional casting and of this fine production. "

Moses Gunn, Rosalind Cash, Bernie Casey, Keith Wilkes, Madge Sinclair,
Laurence Fishburne III

"...A kid witnesses the shooting death of the neighborhood basketball star. The basketball player had been mistaken by the police as a crime suspect. The kid is subjected to harrassment from the policement involved to keep quiet about what he knows. The cops even go so far as to intimidate his mother. This is an early film appearance of Lawrence Fishburne's. He was thirteen or fourteen when he did this movie. The always magnificent late Rosalind Cash plays his mother. The film makes a sharp comment about the conflicts people have with the very people who are supposed to be protecting them."

Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman (1974)
58m | Documentary

The life and career of symphony conductor Antonia Brico is examined in this documentary. Brico's struggle to overcome the sexual bias in her male-dominated profession is highlighted, and she is seen at work in rare backstage footage.

Director
Judy Collins
Cast
Judy Collins, Jill Godmilow

''Antonia Brico could have had a successful career as a concert pianist, but in the 1930s, the Dutch-born musician broke new ground for women in classical music, becoming the first female conductor of the New York Philharmonic and wielding the baton before prestigious symphony orchestras across the United States and Europe. One of Brico's former piano students, folk singer Judy Collins, co-directed this intimate documentary about the groundbreaking classical conductor.....

"....This edgy, captivating film endures because of the fortuitous
chemistry between the filmmakers and their subject, Collins’
longstanding affection for Antonia, Godmilow’s innovative
film technique, and of course the extraordinary character of
Brico herself.
Released at the height of the 1970s Feminist Movement in America, the film enjoyed
immediate blockbuster success. Nearly every major film festival screened the documentary,
including the American Film Festival, London Film Festival and Berlin Film Festival....

In 1974, shortly after the release of the film, Louis “Studs” Terkel, the 1985 Pulitzer Prize
winning American writer, historian and broadcaster interviewed Jill Godmilow on the 98.7
WFMT Chicago radio show, The Studs Terkel Program. The genius of the film, he observed, lies
in the director’s multidimensional approach. Unlike standard documentaries which focus on
one-dimensional facts, “Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman” tells not only of Antonia Brico’s
journey, but more importantly, seamlessly weaves together emotions of the subject, the film
maker and the audience......

Thanks. Interesting. I did not know that Judy Collins ever made a film as a director. This appears to be her only credit as a director.

The film is a look back into the life of an extraordinary man, a man who has fittingly been called "an artist dedicated to concealment, a celebrity who nobody knew."
As he struggled with self-doubt, engaging in a lonely tug-of-war between needing to express himself and wanting to shut the world out, Pollock began a downward spiral.

Director
Ed Harris
Cast:
Ed Harris as Jackson Pollock
Marcia Gay Harden as Lee Krasner
Tom Bower as Dan Miller
Jennifer Connelly as Ruth Kligman
Bud Cort as Howard Putzel
John Heard as Tony Smith
Val Kilmer as Willem de Kooning

"...a 2000 American independent biographical drama film centered on the life of American painter Jackson Pollock, his struggles with alcoholism, as well as his troubled marriage to his wife Lee Krasner. The film stars Ed Harris, Marcia Gay Harden, Jennifer Connelly, Robert Knott, Bud Cort, Molly Regan, and Sada Thompson, and was directed by Harris.

Marcia Gay Harden won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying Lee Krasner. Ed Harris received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of Pollock. The film was a long-term personal project for Harris based on his reading of the 1989 biography Jackson Pollock: An American Saga, written by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith. ..

Winged Migration (2003)
1h 31m | Documentary

A series of journeys around the world with migratory birds. . As the seasons and the climates change, we follow different birds through an assortment of beautiful countries and locales.

Director
Jacques Cluzaud

"....The movie, which is awesome to regard, is not particularly informative; it tells us that birds fly south in the winter (unless they live in the Southern Hemisphere, in which case they fly north), that they fly many hundreds or thousands of miles, and that they navigate by the stars, the sun, the Earth's gravitational field and familiar landmarks. These facts are widely known, and the movie's sparse narration tells us little else.

But facts are not the purpose of "Winged Migration." It wants to allow us to look, simply look, at birds--and that goal it achieves magnificently. There are sights here I will not easily forget. ...."

Far From Heaven (2002)
1h 47m | Drama

It is the fall of 1957. The Whitakers, the very picture of a suburban family, make their home in Hartford, Connecticut. Their daily existences are characterized by carefully observed family etiquette, social events, and an overall desire to keep up with the Joneses. Cathy Whitaker is the homemaker, wife and mother. Frank Whitaker is the breadwinner, husband and father. Together they have the perfect '50s life: healthy kids and social prominence. Then one night, Cathy discovers her husband's secret life....

Director
Todd Haynes

Cast
Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, and Patricia Clarkson.

"Far From Heaven focuses on several controversial issues of the mid-twentieth century, such as racism and miscegenation, as well as views on homosexuality and escapism during that time period, and presents these issues through the mise-en-scène and cinematographic conventions of a 1950s-style melodrama.
Utilizing the nostalgic mechanisms of a polished, period melodrama, the film challenges the typical sanguine nature of the genre in an effort to highlight the central conflicts of its main characters, Cathy and Frank Whitaker, while also simultaneously shattering the wholesome image of American life during this time period, which is typically romanticized in American culture.[5] Haynes employs these tactics and others, such as lighting and music, to highlight these pivotal developments and not only further the plot of the story, but create a sensory experience for the audience that lulls them into what appears to portray an idealized version of 1950s suburban American family life, but proves to be far from it......

Far from Heaven has received high acclaim from critics since its release. It holds an 87% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 221 reviews, with an average rating of 8.20/10; the site's critical consensus reads: "An exquisitely designed and performed melodrama, Far From Heaven earns its viewers' tears with sincerity and intelligence."[10] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 84 out of 100 based on reviews from 37 critics, indicating "universal acclaim"....
The film was nominated in four categories at the 75th Academy Awards: Best Actress in a Leading Role (Julianne Moore), Best Original Screenplay (Todd Haynes), Best Cinematography (Edward Lachman), and Best Original Score (Elmer Bernstein)......

Cast

"On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Indochine holds an approval rating of 75%, based on 20 reviews, and an average rating of 6.4/10.[9]

Critics' reviews praised the film's photography and scenery, while citing issues with the plot and character development. Roger Ebert wrote the film "intends to be the French 'Gone with the Wind,' a story of romance and separation, told against the backdrop of a ruinous war". He continued "'Indochine' is an ambitious, gorgeous missed opportunity – too slow, too long, too composed. It is not a successful film, and yet there is so much good in it that perhaps it's worth seeing anyway…The beauty, the photography, the impact of the scenes shot on location in Vietnam, are all striking.....
