The "conquistadors" aren't an anachronism. Those background extras were portraying colonial sentries, and the hats (helmets, really) they wore (which most people do associate with the Spanish conquistadors) are called cabassets, derived from the Spanish morion helmets. The English adopted them in the 16th century, and the Pilgrims brought them with them to the colonies. They have been found in archeological sites at Jamestown, for example.

BTW, I found the film to be uneven. Agree about the comic bits being out of place, but most of the acting reminded me of a junior high school play...

Thanks. Interesting. I did not know that Judy Collins ever made a film as a director. This appears to be her only credit as a director.
