Dulces horas (1982)
1h 45m | Drama | TV-MA
A man is tormented by his young mother's suicide.
Director
Carlos Saura
Cast
Assumpta Serna, Inaki Aierra, Jacques Lalande

"...reviewed by Pauline Kael in The New Yorker; " This movie has the kind of subtle obviousness that is generally described as literate. What it comes down to is that Carlos Saura has a feeling for dark, autumnal elegance, and a dexterous technique that he puts at the service of tired ideas. What saves him from pedantry is that his films have occasional moments of erotic vibrancy. Scenes that aren't explicitly sexual in content are sexualized, so that they become ambiguous and disturbing - even haunting......"

Elisa, Vida Mia (1976)
2h 5m | Drama
Father and daughter reunite after a 20 year separation.
Director
Carlos Saura
Cast
Fernando Rey, Geraldine Chaplin, Isabel Mestres

"Vincent Canby of The New York Times praised Chaplin and Rey; "The main reasons to see the film are the two leading performances. Mr. Rey is always an interesting presence, and Miss. Chaplin as in all of her Saura films, reveals qualities of feeling, control and beauty that no other directors have ever found."[2]

Saura was nominated for the Palme d'Or for the film, and won Best Director at Spain's Cinema Writers Circle Awards.[3] .......

I checked out Over the Brooklyn Bridge, which I didn't enjoy as much as I wanted to enjoy it.

Among the ensemble cast, I was impressed with the performance of Burt Young (playing a character who had a bit more range to him than Young's stock Dese, Dem, 'n Dose toughs) and the beauty of Carol Kane (whose hairstyle made her, to me, resemble Ann Sothern).

Portnoy's Complaint (1972)
1h 41m | Adaptation
During a session with his psychoanalyst, Alexander Portnoy rants about everything that is bothering him and it's a long list. His complaints include his childhood and his family with an emphasis on his mother, his sexual fantasies and the problems that he has with women,....

Director
Ernest Lehman
Cast
Richard Benjamin, Karen Black, Lee Grant

"Vincent Canby of The New York Times called it "an unqualified disaster as a film, a ponderous, off-center comedy that... is almost as tasteless as many idiots—people who don't know the difference between good tastelessness and bad tastelessness—thought the novel was, wrongly."[3] Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune gave the film one star out of four and wrote, "Ernest Lehman, who served as script writer and director, has replaced Alex's energy with surprisingly tame and traditional Hollywood melodrama visuals, and when these visuals are matched with a soundtrack full of dirty language, the effect is depressing."[4]
Variety was positive and called it "a most effective, honest in context, necessarily strong and appropriately bawdy study in ruinous self-indulgence. Besides adapting the Philip Roth novel into a lucid, balanced and moral screenplay, and producing handsomely on various locations, Ernest Lehman makes an excellent directorial debut. Richard Benjamin heads an outstanding cast."[5] Charles Champlin of the Los Angeles Times described the film as an "honorable failure".....

Wow thanks for that heads up on SOLOMON KING - I had skipped over it, not usually liking revenge/violence movies. Reading the above quote about the score makes it worth giving it a look!

Thanks for posting that Dick Tracy short- I gave it a quick pre-view & those gals at the door made me LOL. It may get me interested enough in finally seeing the movie.
Just the synopsis of that Burt Lancaster movie tells me I shouldn't watch it-I'd be screaming at the telly disgusted by the characters bad decisions.

The "Dick Tracy Special (2009)" has been shown on TCM once before in July, 2012:

https://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/757727/ ... l#overview

However, the listing this time is called "Dick Tracy Special: Tracy Zooms in (2022)", and TCM is currently not linking to the page for the previous special. (The linked page for the new title is currently not defined in TCM's database.)

So it might be a new special for TCM, or it could be a bad listing for a repeat showing of the Leonard Maltin - Warren Beatty video.

Director
Olivier Assayas
Cast
Virginie Ledoyen, Cyprien Fouquet, Laszlo Szabo

"....Assayas said the film is autobiographical, reflecting upon his own teenage years. He went out of his way to cast actors who were not professionals or who, as in the case of male lead Cyprien Fouquet (playing Gilles), had never acted before, although female lead Virginie Ledoyen (playing Christine) had appeared in several films. The film was the result of a commission from French TV, which wanted a 52-minute film but allowed Assayas to make a longer version, ....

Director
Jack Nicholson
Cast
William Tepper, Karen Black, Michael Margotta

"Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film three stars out of four and called it "a disorganized but occasionally brilliant movie," with the performances being "the best thing in the movie. Nicholson himself is a tremendously interesting screen actor, and he directs his actors to achieve a kind of intimacy and intensity that is genuinely rare. But if Nicholson is good on the nuances, he's weak on the overall direction of his film. It doesn't hang together for us as a unified piece of work."....

Return of the Prodigal Son (1966)
Drama

Engineer Jan Sebek (Jan Kacer) is undergoing treatment in a mental home after his unsuccessful attempt to commit suicide. His therapist, via discussions both with the patient and with people who know him, tries to find out what made the young and seemingly satisfied man decide to end his own life.

Director
Evald Schorm
Cast
Jiri Menzel, Sergej Machonin, Frantisek Uldrich

"....Low key would be the best phrase to describe the performances and overall mood. There is scarcely any music except for a few scenes. The performances are almost completely drained of any theatricality, with only the occasional spurts of passion. Jan especially seems to keep the same mono tone throughout the movie, and his eyes almost always hidden behind sun glasses. Like other masters who have used this technique, the effect is utterly absorbing and sits in the mind long after viewing has completed....
However, the film is also methodically paced, which in combination with the performance, will require the viewer to be prepared to focus. I don't consider this a flaw, but anyone wanting to watch this should be prepared for that.....
