Mr. Bates. Tortured soul. Object of attention to the best looking woman on the show. His life is about to get more interesting.

It might be even more interesting....if they can ever get poor Bates out of the pokey. Hope they address this plot wrinkle first thing in the upcoming third season.

Mr Bates is lovely, but my heart belongs to Robert, Earl of Grantham....

Not a BBC production (well Downtown Abbey ain't either  ) but a very interesting British series: "The Devil's Whore" (2008) aka as "The Devil's Mistress" in which Andrea Riseborough portrays the fictional character of Lady Angelica Fanshawe, an heiress and ward of Charles I of England, whose disadventures are set against the background of the English Civil War, and who gets involved with such historical characters as Edward Sexby, Oliver Cromwell, Thomas Rainsborough et al. Very well done.

A brief interview with Maggie Smith and 87 pictures from Episode 1 of Season 3 of Downton Abbey have been posted online at the link below. It looks as though the '20s are coming on strong...but I am worried that it looks as though our favorite felon, Mr. Bates, is still in the pokey.

The series debuts Sept. 16th in the UK, but we have to wait until January  :

I can't wait until Sunday when it airs, unfortunately I haven't watched the Christmas episode of Downton yet. Do you want me to report on it or do you want me to keep my lips tightly sealed, I promise not to give away any plot secrets but just talk about generalities like the costumes. I like Cora, I think she's my favourite, she's far more backbone than her husband, who I like too but not as much as her. I'm looking forward to Shirley MaClaine's appearance, I can't think of a better bit of casting but I hope they don't play it too much for laughs, which I'm sure they won't. For once I get to watch something before you guys

It might bother other people if you and Stuart report on the new season, Alison, but I would like to know if you enjoyed it. Spoilers never bother me, but I don't want to upset anyone else's anticipation.

I wouldn't dream of spoilers but just to tantalise you all with our enjoyment.

Oh, Alison, tread softly! I am so looking forward to the new season, and I won't even check out Moira's link to the previews!!!!

I agree with you, I hope they don't make Shirley MacLaine just a caricature of a wealthy older American woman. Just thinking of her, and her head to head confrontations with Dame Maggie leave me giggling, especially if they are both dead serious about it..

Downton starts tonight but I guess I'm going to have to record it, I have to keep early hours so I'll have to wait until tomorrow.
