NOT NECESSARILY NOIR II @ The Roxie Nov 4 - 8
NOT NECESSARILY NOIR II @ The Roxie Nov 4 - 8
No rest for the weary, as the saying goes. Two weeks from this Friday I'll be unveiling
my latest concoction at the Roxie in San Francisco!! NOT NECESSARILY NOIR II will be
a five day fest of throroughly unusual film fare. A series like this is always good for an
argument or two amongst the purists, but as I always say, "Everybody's right."
Highlights include Don Siegel's incendiary 1964 version of THE KILLERS, the recently
discussed BRAINSTORM, Nick Ray's JOHNNY GUITAR, and a triple-feature tribute to none
other than Edward D. Wood, Jr!!
Here's a link to the Roxie website with descriptions and details.

Interesting listing of films Mr. D. A Sabbath with Joan Crawford would be quite the treat--especially with Female on the Beach, but I'd rather get stuck in on a rainy Monday with Teenage Gang Debs and Girl Gang. I trust the metal detectors have been repaired? The last thing I need is a shiv in my spine.

Well, Dr. Dewey, ya done did dood it yet again.
Yeah, GLEN OR GLENDA is the personal masterpiece and PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE gets the hype, but I'm a simple soul...JAIL BAIT is my favorite Wood-directed opus (THE VIOLENT YEARS is my sentimental favorite of his writing). And it's darn-near another Timothy Farrell tribute you got goin' here. Bravo!
Please, please, oh kind sir, please hold back some good ones for the Spring rejuvenation of my heart of darkness.

I hope this is just as successful for you, I'll be waiting to hear how it goes.

This does sound like a very good show. Nov. 6 especially. Oh, if I were only out of school and had a better-paying position...
By all means, pay a visit to Columbus or Cincinnati sometime and host a marathon.

Sure do wish everyone here who would want to be at this
cool series—WHICH STARTS TONITE!!--could be here!
Our opening films, a not so subtle nod to Don Siegel and
his young protoge, Clint Eastwood, should set the tone.

Last night we had a terrific crowd for our KILLERS / MISTY opening
night and a very responsive crowd at that! First things first: both 35mm
studio archive prints were spectacular and pristine! That factor really added
to the high impact experience in the theater. One thing that really stood out
for me during THE KILLERS was how the whole “Occupy Oakland”
phenomenon was not lost on the crowd when 99%er Johnny North
(Cassavetes) squares off with Mr. 1% Jack Browning (Reagan).

Today we feature recent Oasis re-discovery BRAINSTORM, William
Conrad’s 1965 black & white wide screen screamer. We press screened this
a couple weeks back and it became a big part of the focus for this series. I first
played it here back in ’95 and had a great turnout for it. I hope we do again.

With it is BLOW OUT, one of my favorite Brian DePalma films—and I’m a huge
DePalma fan!! For me it approximates a similar level of paranoid hysteria as
BRAINSTORM and hope this pairing pleases the fans.

Lynn and Marco – looking forward to seeing you down there. I’ll be there for
the 5:40 and 7:45!

Today, those with a hearty taste for Mommie Dearest will have
their ultimate fantasy as Not Necessarily Noir heads into Day Three
with an incredible double dose of primo Joan Crawford. Up first is
Nick Ray’s sensational 1954 Tru-Color western fandango, JOHNNY
GUITAR!! Is it a lesbian manifesto? A bitter condemnation of the
McCarthy hearings? A blueprint for Freudian psychology? Just what
is it??

There are very few actresses who can get away with a line like “I wouldn’t
have you if you were hung with diamonds upside down!” FEMALE ON THE
BEACH, Joseph Pevney’s 1955 overripe melodarama about a sexually stiff
older woman and the much younger beach bum who curiously covets her?

Great to see Lynn and Marco yesterday for BRAINSTORM. They braved some
pretty nasty weather to get here and I thank them for their dedication!
