I never gave much credence to Damone, Jr.'s accusations. Vic Damone has virtually no public association with the Mob, which in itself is unusual for an Italian-American nightclub performer of his generation. The rumors I heard when I was a girl were based, in part, on hearsay from Damones' friends and family (I lived in the same neighborhood, but years apart from Damone. We attended the same high school). My impression at the time was that Pier Angeli was a little nutsy and had an impossible mother, but that was based only what I heard from others, most of whom, I now assume, were on Damone's side of the argument at the couple's breakup. It's hard to imagine that he hated her so much he had her done away with --it's not Our Thing, you know, to rub out your own wife. At least, it wasn't back then.Vecchiolarry wrote:Wow Judith,
In all my years in LA, I never heard that one!!!! - - Vic Damone contracting to have Pier Angeli 'rubbed out' by the Mafia......
Vic Damone has always come across as a "polite young gentleman" (my governess, Laura's words) and has not really had any controversy associated with him. But, then again, often it's those quiet ones who are the real bastards in life - - "Still waters often run deep!!"..
Also, I never heard of her being engaged to Kirk Douglas. Wasn't he hitched up to Anne by then??? Pier was associated with James Dean; but then, so were Natalie Wood, Ursula Andress and Julie Harris... I've heard that Mama Angeli objected to him because he stunk, literally (the man never bathed)....
All of this is just rumours, of course, since I never knew any of them.....

No matter what the truth may be, he's still my very favorite male singer.
