Yes, both Lana and Arlene dodged a bullet, but later Esther Williams picked him up and actually stayed 'happily' married to him till his death.

I never read a more depressing autobiography than Esther Williams became after her marriage to him. She literally put her entire life on hold until he died. I don't know how she stuck it out.
