Michel Simon is a wonderful French actor, I've seen two films with him in and he stole both movies. L'Atalante is the film to look out for, directed by Jean Vigo and with Dita Parlo too, it's a haunting and beautiful tale.

I thought about adding him, ML. Thing is when I think about all the foreign actors I like, I find it hard because I might have seen a couple of films with that person in. I added Jean Gabin and Marcello Mastroianni because I have at least had chance to see them in a few films.
Failure is unimportant. It takes courage to make a fool of yourself - Charlie Chaplin

I believe the request was for favorites, not necessarily 'best' or 'finest' so my list is rather haphazard because some come instantly to mind, and others take a few minutes of thought.

..1. Robert Mitchum (of course)
..2. Cary Grant (like T. Curtis said, he's the greatest)
..3. Randolph Scott - best cowboy
..4. John Wayne - I just love him
..5. Gregory Peck - so handsome and a great actor
..6. Joel McCrea- kind of out of order
..7. Bogart - I love to watch his mannerisms
..8. James Stewart - Love his stumbling ways
..9. Richard Widmark - Should be higher up on list
10. Spencer Tracey - Should also be higher up
11. Ben Johnson - I like his looks and quiet strength
12. Sean Connery - Best 'foreigner' in H'wood
13. Robert Redford - Feel like I grew up with him
14. Paul Newman - Same as Redford
15. Dan Dailey - liked his attitude on screen - always cheerful
16. Tyrone Power - What's not to like?
17. Alan Ladd- Reminds me of Baby Bear in Goldilocks
18. Clint Eastwood - Another I grew up with
19. Gene Hackman - Fine actor
20. Denzel Washington - Love everything he does
21. Morgan Freeman - Does everything well and to a T
22. Tom Selleck - Love his 'Stone' detective movies
23. Elvis - based on about 7 of his movies
*24. Joel Gretsch
*25. Michael Shanks

*two young actors nobody seems to know are around and both are capable of drama, comedy and everything in between.

I found the list for men much easier than for women, so the gals will come later.

Hi moviemagz! I love your list---but can you tell me a little
about #23? I haven't heard of him, or perhaps I've overlooked
him. What movies do you like him in?

And I love when people like Arthur Lake land on people's lists. :D

Thanks, very much.

Hi AnnHarding! You certainly bring contintal flavor to the proceedings
with that merry mixture. It's too delightful when a name from the cinema
like Anton Walbrook lands on someone's list of favorites. I just wish
these people could see how their work lived long after them. And that
they would be discussed in a medium as "strange" as the internet!

Merci beaucoup de votre participation.

Robert Harron (or Bobby Harron) was featured in many Griffith silent shorts as well as in the lovely True Heart Susie with Lillian Gish and in Intolerance. He died extremely young in a freak accident with a revolver. He was only 27. :(

Thank you, Ann. I really do intend to get to Griffith soon. I suspect
he will become a favorite.

Hi Anne! Like you, I find it harder to list actresses.

Your description of Alan Ladd broke me up! Thanks for mentioning two young actors. I admit I never heard of them but they sure must have made an impression on you if they are in such illustrious company. :)

Again, per your specifications:

1-Cary Grant - versatile, charming, the ultimate movie actor.
2-James Stewart
3-Charles Laughton
4-Alec Guinness
5-William Powell

and the rest, in no order:

6-W. C. Fields
7-Toshiro Mifune
8-George Sanders
9-Charles Chaplin
10-Buster Keaton
11-Takashi Shimura
12-Peter Sellers
13-Humphrey Bogart
14-Claude Rains
15-James Mason
16-Emil Jannings
17-Edward G. Robinson
18-Boris Karloff
19-Kirk Douglas
20-Jack Nicholson
21-The Marx Brothers (counting all three as one)
22-Robert Mitchum
23-Divine
24-Fredric March
25-Franklin Pangborn

Was sorry (again) to leave off James Cagney, Peter Lorre, Spencer Tracy, Elisha Cook Jr., John Wayne, William Demarest, Sonny Chiba, John Carradine, Klaus Kinski, Lon Chaney, Robert Ryan, Charles Ruggles, Ward Bond, Richard Widmark, Anthony Perkins, Jack Palance, and Marcello Mastroianni.

And if television stars counted, I'd see about making room for Carroll O'Connor, Dick Van Dyke, Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce.
